Good to know
Approval period
Minimum two months, maximum eleven months.
Validity
Begins on the first day of the operating month, ends on the last day of the operating month.
The registration period is stamped on the license plate, e.g.: see illustration on the right (seasonal registration from 1 March to 31 October of the year).
It is not possible to select two operating periods for a vehicle, e.g. from March to May and additionally from September to October.
License plate
Operating period added to license plate and registration certificate part I (vehicle registration document). More than seven digits (letters and numbers) are not permitted on a license plate.
Special feature
The vehicle is also deemed to be registered outside the operating period, not out of service. Outside the operating period is the period that is not included on the license plate and the registration certificate part I (vehicle registration document); during this period, the vehicle may not be used or parked in public traffic.
Main inspection
If an inspection is to be carried out outside the operating period, the inspection must be carried out in the first month of the next operating period.
Insurance
The insurance must be in force at all times.
If the insurer notifies the registration authority that the insurance cover has lapsed, the registration authority must also order the vehicle to be taken out of service outside the operating period. The costs are borne by the vehicle owner.
Changes
The operating period can be changed for a fee by submitting the registration certificate part I (vehicle registration certificate), registration certificate part II (vehicle registration document), operating license, the license plate(s) and a new insurance confirmation with the new operating period entered.
Regulations
In principle, all regulations that apply to normal license plates apply to vehicles with assigned seasonal license plates.
Oldtimer license plates (H license plates), E license plates and green license plates can also be assigned as seasonal license plates.
A vehicle to which a seasonal license plate has been assigned may be put into operation outside the operating period with a short-term license plate if the seasonal license plate is not used at the same time.
Sale of the vehicle (transfer or donation)
The notification of sale (also outside the operating period) is mandatory. The last registered keeper is responsible. It is safer to decommission the vehicle before handing it over.
Fee
from € 27.60 plus price for license plates.
