Housing benefit

Social affairs

Housing costs money - often too much for people with low incomes. For this reason, the state provides financial assistance in such cases: housing benefit. It is paid as a subsidy. Housing benefit is available for tenants in the form of a rent subsidy and for owners in the form of an encumbrance allowance.

You can only receive housing benefit on application. This application must be made in writing. The application must be signed and all required supporting documents must be enclosed.

The application for housing benefit must generally be submitted by the head of the household. Whether and to what extent you can claim housing benefit depends on

  • the number of family members
  • the amount of the family income
  • the amount of eligible rent or charges

The application can be submitted to the respective municipal administration of the place of residence. This then forwards the application to the responsible housing benefit office of the district administration for processing. You can obtain the necessary application documents from the municipal administration and the district office.

The application should be submitted in good time, as the benefit can generally only be granted from the beginning of the month in which the application is received by the mayor's office or the responsible housing benefit office of the district administration.
