Anyone wishing to train persons who wish to acquire a permit to drive motor vehicles within the meaning of the Road Traffic Act requires a driving instructor's license.
A driving instructor license is issued on application if the applicant
- is at least 21 years old,
- is mentally, physically, professionally and pedagogically suitable,
- there are no facts that make the applicant appear unreliable for the driving instructor profession,
- has at least completed vocational training in a recognized teaching profession or equivalent previous training,
- is in possession of the driving license for which the driving instructor license is to be issued. It should be noted here that the applicant must have held a category B driving license for at least three years and, if he/she also wishes to obtain a category A, CE or DE driving license, a category A2, CE or D driving license for two years in each case (the three-year period of possession of category B driving license may also include possession as part of accompanied driving from the age of 17 or during the probationary period).
- have been trained as a driving instructor within the last three years,
- have proven their professional aptitude in an examination in accordance with § 8 of the Driving Instructors Act,
- have the necessary knowledge of the German language to exercise the profession of driving instructor.
The requirements for issuing a driving instructor license to holders of a certificate of competence from another country are governed by § 3 FahrlG.
