E-license plate

Information about the E license plate

Good to know

The e-license plate is issued on application. The Electric Mobility Act (EmoG) specifies which vehicles are to be classified as electrically powered vehicles and can therefore receive preferential treatment, e.g. parking privileges.

Design of the e-license plate

The design of the license plate is analogous to the so-called H license plate (classic car license plate) with the difference that instead of the letter "H", the letter "E" must be added after the identification number. For vehicles with interchangeable license plates, the marking is made on the vehicle-related part of the license plate, for vehicles with seasonal license plates always directly behind the identification number. The E license plate can also be combined with green license plates.

Vehicle type

Vehicles of the classes M1, N1, N2, L3e, L4e, L5e and L7e are eligible for the E license plate. Identification is based on the fuel type/energy source in field 10 of the registration certificate part I (vehicle registration document).

These are in particular

  • pure battery electric vehicles
  • externally rechargeable hybrid electric vehicles (plug-in)
  • fuel cell vehicles

Application for allocation

Required documents:

    • Registration certificate part I
    • Registration certificate part II
    • the license plate number

In many cases, the EC Certificate of Conformity (COC document) must also be presented. For some vehicles, it is not possible for the registration authority to make a clear assignment, which is why corresponding proof must be provided. This proof can either be an expert opinion from a testing organization or a manufacturer's certificate.

    Vehicles from other countries

Vehicles from other countries can apply for the allocation of an "E-Sticker".

The applicant must provide evidence of the requirements:

      • Registration certificate Part I
      • EC Certificate of Conformity (COC document) or
      • Other suitable documents

Note: The sticker must be clearly visible at the rear of the vehicle.

        Fee

E-license plate (depending on the process) at €27.80 to €49.50 (e.g. a re-labeling is required if the possible number of digits on the license plate is exhausted by the additional "E").
E-plate (for other countries) at €11.00
