Cycle paths & network expansion

In the district of Ludwigsburg, there are countless paths that are ideal for cycling. These include roadside cycle paths as well as country lanes and farm tracks outside of towns and cities as well as quiet side roads or main roads with protective and cycle lanes within the towns and municipalities.

In addition to these everyday cycle paths, the district also has a number of recreational cycle paths with tourist cycle routes through scenic areas. A total of over 800 kilometers of cycle routes are currently recorded and signposted in the district.

Of course, this network was not planned on a greenfield site, but has developed over the decades. As a result, there are not yet continuous connections everywhere and not all of the routes used by cyclists comply with the mandatory recommendations for cycling facilities in Baden-Württemberg. It is the declared aim of the district of Ludwigsburg to continuously improve and expand this established network. Various plans are interlinked here - at state, district and municipal level.

RadNETZ BW - cycle network planning at state level

As part of the RadSTRATEGIE - the roadmap for promoting cycling in the state - the Baden-Württemberg state government adopted the implementation of the so-called RadNETZ in 2016: The plan is to provide nationwide, continuous bicycle connections suitable for everyday use between medium-sized and major centers along the most important settlement axes throughout the state. The aim is to create a 7,000-kilometre-long network that will connect 700 municipalities across the country in main cycle routes with uniform, signposted routes.

In our district, this includes the connections from Stuttgart to Heilbronn as a north-south axis via Ludwigsburg and Bietigheim-Bissingen as well as the east-west axis from Bietigheim-Bissingen via Vaihingen to Pforzheim. The route between Stuttgart and Leonberg passes through the district of Ditzingen.

The expansion of RadNETZ BW is not only the responsibility of the state, but also of the local authorities and the district. The Ministry of Transport has developed quality standards and model solutions for the expansion to assist with planning. These have just been updated and published (status 2025).

The cycle network concept - cycle network planning at district level

In order to create a comprehensive, attractive network for cycling, the state's RadNETZ BW network is being expanded in our district. To this end, a cycle network concept has been drawn up which documents the current situation and describes measures to improve and expand the infrastructure.

The district's cycle connections are not only self-contained, but also have links to all neighboring districts and municipalities.

The cycle network concept is currently being finalized and will be incorporated into the existing geoinformation systems of the state (RadVIS) and the district once completed.

Municipal cycle networks - network planning at municipal level

A lot is also happening at local level in the district of Ludwigsburg. The RadNETZ BW and the district cycle network, which show the supra-regional, regional and local connections, are supplemented by inner-city cycle networks. Some of these can be viewed on the respective municipal websites.

We look forward to hearing from you!
