Good to know
Two vehicles can be used alternately with the alternate license plate.
Prerequisite
The vehicles must fall into the same vehicle category and have the same license plate size and both vehicles must be registered to the same vehicle owner.
License plate
The alternate license plate consists of a small plate (vehicle-related part), which must be permanently attached to the vehicle, and a common part which is changed back and forth as required.
The letter H of the classic car license plate is affixed to the vehicle-related part.
Vehicle classes
- Class M1:
Cars up to 8 seats except driver's seat and motorhomes up to 3.5 t - Class O1:
Trailers up to 750 kg permissible total mass - Class L:
Motorcycles, four-wheeled light motor vehicles and four-wheeled cargo vehicles up to 550 kg unladen mass, excluding the mass of batteries for electric vehicles and maximum useful power up to 15 kW
One or both of the vehicles registered with variable license plates can also be classic cars.
Special features
An interchangeable license plate can only be used on one of the vehicles at a time. The owner may not park the unused vehicle with an interchangeable license plate in public traffic areas.
Note
It is not possible to combine seasonal, red license plates, short-term license plates or export license plates.
Decommissioning
The registration certificate part I and the small plate (vehicle-related part) with the stamped sticker must be presented to decommission a vehicle with an interchangeable license plate. If no other vehicle remains registered with the variable license plate, the common part must also be presented for de-stamping.
Fee
In addition to the usual registration fees and the costs for the set of license plates, the allocation of the interchangeable license plate for both vehicles costs €12.00.
