Route planning & signposting

Route planning

Cycling has long since ceased to be possible without information media. In the past, maps were the most important source of information for cyclists, but this medium has now been replaced by digital options. Cycle route planners on the Internet can be used to plan a cycle route precisely and individually. This is why, in addition to our printed maps, the District Office also processes and manages the digital data that we pass on to the major planning portals "Radroutenplaner BW" from the Baden-Württemberg public transport company and the "Radroutenplaner Region Stuttgart" from the VVS transport association. With both route planners, it is possible to link cycle routes with local public transport so that you can reach your destination by both public transport and bike. The digital data is regularly updated as required and compared with the route planners once a year.

The following maps and digital services are available:

The map "Cycling in the heart of Baden-Württemberg - Ludwigsburg district" lists all the cycle paths in the district and suggests routes. It was published by the Baden-Württemberg State Surveying Office. Production has now been discontinued, but some remaining copies are available from bookshops or specialist cycle shops (ISBN: 978-3-89021-722-2).

The "Cycle Map of the Stuttgart Region" lists 24 tours "for explorers and connoisseurs". It was published by the Stuttgart e-bike region and can be obtained from: info[at]e-bike-region-stuttgart.de

The "Cycle map of the Ludwigsburg district" provides an overview of tourist cycle routes and the everyday cycle route network. It is published by the Ludwigsburg District Office and is available there, at the Citizen Information Center, but also in many towns and municipalities, as well as directly from: tourismus[at]landkreis-ludwigsburg.de

The digital map "Touristic cycle routes in the district of Ludwigsburg" shows the exact routes of the Neckar Valley Cycle Route, Celtic Trail and co.

With the nvbw's RadROUTENPLANER Baden-Württemberg, you can calculate different cycle routes between start and finish, depending on whether you prefer to travel faster or more comfortably. Click here for the BIKE ROUTE PLANNER.

With the VVS cycle route planner, you can select the destination and start of a route and the system will then calculate a connection by bike, bus and train or a combination of both. Click here for the VVS cycle route planner.

Further maps and detailed information on the tourist cycle routes can also be found in the Tourism section.

Signage

Even those without a map or cell phone should be able to find their way to their destination. Cycling signposting provides orientation and guides cyclists to safely developed sections. This is particularly important for beginners: without such assistance, they often intuitively choose routes that they know from driving a car or taking the bus. In most cases, however, off-road cycle paths, shortcuts through open one-way streets or side streets with few junctions are the better choice for getting from A to B safely and quickly. To make such routes easy to find, the entire cycle network in the district of Ludwigsburg has been signposted consistently and uniformly. The local authorities are responsible for signposting (i.e. installing and maintaining the signposts) on their territory. However, with the aim of bringing the signposting up to scratch quickly and easily, a few years ago the district of Ludwigsburg took charge of the complete new signposting in the district, both organizationally and financially, thus relieving the burden on the local authorities.

Specifications for location and design

Unlike traffic signs (e.g. "bicycle free"), cycle route signs are not anchored in the StVO (unlike signs for motorized private transport). Nevertheless, there are requirements that must be observed. Up to now, the design of cycle route signposts has been based on a nationwide set of rules, the so-called "Merkblatt" (information sheet) of the Road and Transportation Research Association (FGSV), which, however, is more of a rough overview. In spring 2020, the state government also published the supplementary standards "Wayfinding signage for cycling in Baden-Württemberg". The aim is to create uniformity in signage throughout the state.

The green cycle route signs in Baden-Württemberg always follow the same pattern. Pictograms and attached signs are used to provide additional information, for example on gradients or tourist attractions along the route.

Examples from the district

Signposting of the RadNETZ BW

The state is responsible for signposting the state network, the RadNETZ BW (see more information here under Cycle routes & network expansion). In addition to signposts, pictograms are also used on the ground as an orientation aid. The state is also setting up a state-wide register of signposts for the RadNETZ. Annual inspections of the entire signage system and the associated maintenance are planned.

Routes & signposting in the district municipalities

There are additional signs and cycle route maps in individual district municipalities.
