Floods and floodplains

In the district of Ludwigsburg

Floodplains are areas in which a flood event is statistically expected to occur once every 100 years. They are shown on flood hazard maps and are intended to keep the remaining retention areas free. In floodplains, for example, the following are prohibited

  • the construction or extension of buildings,
  • the erection of walls, embankments or similar structures at right angles to the direction of flow,
  • the depositing of objects that could obstruct the flow of water for more than a short period of time,
  • the raising or deepening of the ground surface,
  • the planting of trees and shrubs.

Exceptions to the prohibitions may be permitted under certain conditions.
For example, when constructing or extending buildings, the flood retention space (retention area) lost as a result of the construction work must be compensated for extensively, functionally and simultaneously.

Flood hazard maps are available for a large number of bodies of water in the Ludwigsburg district. These can be accessed via the LUBW data and map service (UDO).

The flood hazard maps (scale 1:10,000) are available in paper form at the Ludwigsburg District Office, Hindenburgstraße 40, 71638 Ludwigsburg, Level 6, Environment Department, Room 624, as well as at the respective municipalities, where they can be viewed free of charge by anyone interested during office hours.
