Restriction to vehicles with automatic transmission - key number B 197 according to § 17a FeV
Since 01.04.2021, it has been possible to obtain a category B driving license without restriction to automatic transmissions despite a practical driving test on a vehicle without a manual transmission if practical training has previously been completed on a vehicle with a manual transmission.
Application for key number 197:
The application can be deposited in the mailbox of the
- Ludwigsburg driving license authority
- Besigheim branch office
- Vaihingen an der Enz branch office
can be posted. It is also possible to submit the application at the town hall of the municipality of residence (except for the city of Ludwigsburg).
A personal visit to the driving license authority is only possible after prior online appointment at the Ludwigsburg district office or the Besigheim and Vaihingen an der Enz branch offices.
The key number 197 must be entered within one year of completing the training.
What documents are required?
- The SZ 197 can be found on the initial application form
- Biometric photograph
- Copy of identity card or passport
- Certificate in accordance with Annex 7 of the learner driver training regulations (switching competence certificate)
- Copy of driving license
The license may not be withdrawn if the restriction to automatic vehicles is due to a lack of aptitude for driving motor vehicles.
Extension of a category B197 driving license
A category B197 driving license does not entitle to waive the restriction to automatic transmissions for upgraded driving license categories (BE, C1, C1E, C, CE, D1, D1E, D or DE).
If the practical driving test for the subsequent driving license category is carried out with a vehicle with automatic transmission, the corresponding category must be assigned the key number 78.
