The contracts serve to preserve and develop animal and plant habitats, with special consideration given to endangered species and species threatened with extinction, and to safeguard the diversity and recreational value of the landscape. A distinction is made between
for farmers to compensate for the conversion of intensively farmed grassland/crop land into extensively farmed grassland/crop land. This means that the measures are carried out on agriculturally usable land. The farmers must have the right to use the contract areas for the entire duration of the contract.
are concluded for the maintenance of non-arable areas such as wetlands, hedges or dry and warm fringes in return for payment. These can be concluded with farmers, associations, private individuals or maintenance companies as service providers.
To conclude the contracts, the contract areas must be located within a protected area (nature reserve, landscape conservation area, natural monument, FFH or bird sanctuary, biotope, nature park) or within demarcated project areas. The term of each contract is five years, although one-year contracts are also possible.
Nature conservation measures by local authorities, associations and private individuals can be funded in particular as part of one-year individual applications under the Landscape Conservation Directive (Part B).
