The Ludwigsburg District is developing a guide on the use of river heat pumps. It is intended to enable local stakeholders to quickly assess the feasibility of river heat pump projects.
Three key areas are covered in depth: permitting and water law, technical implementation, and economic viability and integration. The information is presented in maps that graphically show which river sections are suitable and which are not. The guide serves as a resource for municipalities in implementing their local heating plans.

The new Energy & Climate business network was successfully launched on Tuesday, May 12, 2026 with a well-attended kick-off event at the Ludwigsburg district hall. The district and city of Ludwigsburg are thus jointly sending a strong signal for more exchange, practical cooperation and effective climate protection in the regional economy. The focus was on the topic of "Artificial intelligence as a lever for climate protection".
The network, which emerged from the previous Ludwigsburg Climate Alliance, is aimed at companies from the district of Ludwigsburg. Small and medium-sized enterprises in particular should benefit from new contacts, joint approaches to solutions and the exchange of information on energy and climate issues.
Katharina Strecker from the Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research BW showed how artificial intelligence can help companies to manage energy consumption and resources more efficiently. "AI has enormous potential to make business processes more sustainable. The greatest leverage is often provided by small AI models that offer great potential for saving resources and energy consumption through predictions and optimization," said Strecker.
At the next network meeting on July 28, the W&W Group will provide an insight into its sustainability activities.

The district's charging infrastructure concept was presented to the Environment and Technology Committee on April 15, 2026. It serves as a practical roadmap to meet the increasing demand for electric vehicles with a comprehensive and needs-based charging infrastructure.
The concept pays particular attention to the publicly accessible charging infrastructure. While in the initial phase it was mainly homeowners with private wallboxes who switched to electric mobility, citizens without their own parking space are now increasingly reliant on charging facilities in public spaces.
With the concept, the district administration is creating the technical basis so that municipalities can approach the expansion of the charging infrastructure in a strategic and organized manner.

The district of Ludwigsburg has published a new guideline that bundles key information on how local authorities and project developers can plan ground-mounted solar installations and find suitable PV areas.
A central component of the guideline is a tabular overview. This shows which types of areas may be suitable for solar installations. These include, for example, areas in the vicinity of industrial and commercial areas, green corridors or former vineyards. This provides local authorities and project developers with quick orientation when selecting suitable sites. The guideline also contains information for successful implementation. This includes aspects such as economic efficiency, the legal framework and public participation.
The guideline can be downloaded here. You can read our press release here.
On March 26, the Municipal Climate Scouts of the 2025/26 round were honored in Kornwestheim. The team from Steinheim received the district prize.
As part of their training, the trainees developed and implemented their own climate protection projects at their workplace - including a craft activity in the company nursery and a sustainability cookbook. At the final event, the teams presented their projects and answered questions from the audience. They were accompanied by mentors from their administrations.
Axel Waltner, Head of the Climate Protection Division at Ludwigsburg District Office, opened the event and praised the commitment of the trainees: "You can discover new potential with a fresh perspective on administrative processes. In addition, you are not only making a direct contribution to reducing emissions: Your commitment also has a positive external impact and you are actively shaping the future of your cities and municipalities."
