Since 01.10.2023, the Tübingen Regional Council, Animal Health, Animal Welfare and Consumer Protection Department (STV), has been responsible for the approval of transport companies and road transport vehicles for long journeys responsible. Further information can be found here.
General information on animal transportation
Regulation (EC) No. 1/2005 of 22 Dec. 2004 on the protection of animals during transport has been applicable since January 2007 and was brought into line with EU regulations with the new version of the Animal Welfare Transport Ordinance of 18 Feb. 2009. The national ordinance also regulates other issues (e.g. transportation in containers, provisions for other animal species).
The following approvals according to Regulation 1/2005 are new:
- Transport companies for journeys of up to 8 hours must be approved in accordance with Art. 10 Para. 1.
- Transport companies for long journeys must be approved in accordance with Art. 11 Para. 1.
- Means of transport for long journeys must be approved in accordance with Art. 18 Para. 2.
The certificate of competence in accordance with Section 13 of the old version of the Animal Welfare Transport Ordinance has been replaced by the certificate of competence for drivers and attendants in accordance with Art. 17 Para. 2. The certificate of competence has been required since 05.01.2008.
Approval as a transport company and the certificate of competence is also required for farmers who transport their own animals more than 65 km to their destination.
