Transfer of foreign driving licenses

You can drive motor vehicles in Germany - without transferring your (EU) driving license - within the scope of your valid EU or EEA driving license. A translation of the driving license document is not required. The EU driving license can be exchanged voluntarily at any time.

Driving licenses issued in a country that is not a member state of the European Union (EU) or a signatory state to the Agreement on the European Economic Area (EEA) entitle the holder to drive a motor vehicle for a period of 6 months from the date of taking up normal residence in Germany.

NoteThe application to transfer a foreign driving license must be submitted in good time before the 6-month period expires. Please note that it may take longer to process these applications.

can be posted. It is also possible to apply at the town hall of the municipality of residence (except for the city of Ludwigsburg).

A personal visit to the driving license authority is only possible after prior online appointment at the Ludwigsburg district office or the Besigheim and Vaihingen an der Enz branch offices.
