Information on the exchange of driving licenses
The federal and state governments have decided on a phased model that will run until 2033. This means that driving licenses issued before 1999 must be exchanged by 19.01.2025 at the latest. The phased plan is staggered according to the age of the license holder - starting with those born between 1953 and 1958, for whom the exchange deadline is 19.01.2022. For driving license holders issued from 1999 onwards, the Federal Council resolution provides for staggered exchange periods from 2026 to 2033 according to the respective age of the documents.
In order to cope with the masses of exchange applications and to save you long waiting times, we recommend that you only exchange your driving license in accordance with your deadline according to the graduated plan.(Exchange periods)
How can I apply for the new EU driving license?
The application can be deposited in the mailbox of the
- Ludwigsburg driving license authority
- Besigheim branch office
- Vaihingen an der Enz branch office
in the mailbox. It is also possible to submit the application at the town hall of the municipality of residence (except for the city of Ludwigsburg).
A personal visit to the driving license authority is only possible after prior online appointment at the Ludwigsburg district office or the Besigheim and Vaihingen an der Enz branch offices.
What documents are required?
The following documents must be submitted with the application:
- 1 biometric photograph
- Copy of previous driving license
- copy of valid identity card or passport
What do I need to bear in mind if I have the old category 2 driving license?
Former class 2 driving licenses are valid until the age of 50 and then lose their validity. Driving license holders who were already 50 years of age or older on 01.01.1999 could still make use of the class 2 driving license until 31.12.2000.
In order to reactivate or continue to activate the classes corresponding to class 2 today, a separate application must be submitted for the issue or extension of the corresponding classes!
