Violence & security

Don't get knocked out - despite partying & co.

After ingestion, an effect occurs after approx. 15 minutes, which can last up to approx. four hours (in some cases even longer - up to a day). The effect of knockout drops is highly dose-dependent and also varies depending on physical condition, alcohol consumption or the use of medication or drugs.

Spectrum of effects:

  • Low dosage: Disinhibiting, relaxing effect
  • Medium dosage: Euphoric, sexually stimulating effect
  • High dosage: Drowsiness, dizziness, deep sleep, coma, respiratory paralysis, death If the knockout drops are taken with alcohol, the effect is intensified, sometimes with dangerous consequences: Not only can unconsciousness occur, but also respiratory arrest.

Those affected describe the progression of symptoms as follows:

  • First symptoms "Dizziness and nausea": after taking knockout drops, sufferers usually feel nauseous and dizzy quite suddenly. They often assume that this effect is caused by alcohol, even if they have not drunk too much up to that point.
  • "Unwilling and manipulable": Even before becoming unconscious, those affected by these substances are unwilling and easily manipulated. This gives the perpetrators enough time to make contact with the person or offer help and then take them outside or to another location.
  • "Sudden drowsiness sets in": With a correspondingly high dosage, a sudden drowsiness sets in. Those affected fall into a deep sleep or even become unconscious. They only regain consciousness hours later.
  • "Film tear when waking up": When waking up, those affected often feel extremely "hungover", completely exhausted and are still beside themselves. In almost all cases, they no longer have any concrete memories later, many report a blackout or total film blackout.

Detectability:

The detection time in the blood for GBL/GHB is only approx. 6 hours, in the urine approx. 8-12 hours after consumption. After that, it is hardly possible to distinguish it from the natural GHB level. In general: If you suspect that you have been given GHB/GBL unknowingly, see a doctor as soon as possible!

Knockout drops are drugs that are administered to another person without their knowledge or consent in order to render them unconscious, helpless or incapable of acting. Under the effect of knockout drops, robbery and sexual offenses occur time and again.

The dangerous thing is that knockout drops are colorless, odorless and tasteless. This means that they cannot be tasted in drinks or food.

They can be medicines (narcotics and tranquilizers) or so-called party drugs such as GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyric acid) or GBL (gamma-butyrolactone). In the party scene, GHB and GBL are also known as "liquid ecstasy", "liquid E" or "liquid X". GHB was developed as an anesthetic and is hardly used medically today. GHB is also found in the human body as a neurotransmitter. Among other things, it regulates wake/sleep states in the brain and stimulates growth hormones. GHB has been subject to the Narcotics Act (BtMG) since March 2002.

In concrete terms, this means that the possession, purchase, trade, distribution and administration of GHB is a punishable offense. GBL is a chemical substance that is widely used as a solvent and cleaning agent. In the body, GBL is converted to GHB and therefore has the same effect

7 reasons why knockout drops are so dangerous:

  1. They don't smell and are completely tasteless!
  2. They take effect after approx. 15 minutes and can last up to 4 hours!
  3. The effect is often confused with excessive alcohol consumption!
  4. Even small amounts can lead to absolute loss of willpower and unconsciousness!
  5. They can cause consequences such as respiratory distress, circulatory failure, coma and even death!
  6. They significantly impair memory!
  7. They are only detectable in the body for a very short time!

7 tips on how to protect yourself from knockout drops:

  1. Never leave your drink unattended!
  2. Don't accept drinks from strangers!
  3. Avoid drinking too much - because the effect of the knockout drops is intensified by your alcohol consumption.
  4. Stay with your friends: Come together, celebrate together and also go together! Take care of each other!
  5. If you feel nauseous or dizzy, let your friends and the event staff know immediately and ask them for help!
  6. Don't be afraid to call the emergency number 110 (police) or 112 (emergency services) in case of suspicion.
  7. Cup condoms can protect against knockout drops.
