Climate and environmental education

Climate protection in schools (KiS)

The successful project "Energy-saving models at schools in the district of Ludwigsburg" has been further developed and is now part of the district-wide project "Climate protection in schools", or "KiS" for short. The realignment is intended to reach even more schools in the district from the 2025/26 school year. Interested local authorities in the district of Ludwigsburg can join the project together with their schools (all school types) and make all the necessary preparations now. The prerequisite for the participation of a school is that a project officer/climate protection officer is appointed in both the municipality and the school.

The Ludwigsburg District Office is looking forward to passing on the experiences of recent years and supporting even more climate protection heroes on their way.

Information and answers to basic questions about project content and participation in KiS can be found in the flyer and FAQs. If you have any further questions, interested municipalities and their schools are welcome to contact Ms. Häusler, who coordinates the project for the district.

Energy-saving models at schools in the Ludwigsburg district

Schools have the potential to raise young people's awareness of climate protection at an early age and teach them important basics in an everyday setting.

The implementation of the project is a measure of the integrated climate protection concept of the district and the integrated climate protection and energy concept of the city of Ludwigsburg. The aim is to teach children and young people about the conscious and sustainable use of limited natural resources in the long term.

To this end, energy teams are set up in the schools to implement energy-saving activities and project weeks on climate protection topics in a practical and creative way at school. This should encourage the school community to rethink and promote energy-saving behavioral changes in everyday school life. Equipped with new knowledge and behaviors, the students can have a multiplying effect in their families and circles of friends and contribute to further rethinking. Parallel to the educational measures, the school's energy consumption is reduced through technical and organizational optimizations. At the end of each year, bonuses are awarded for climate protection activities to motivate pupils to continue.

Project launch and 1st award event

The project was officially launched at the schools with the kick-off event on October 7, 2021.

At the first award ceremony on 26 April 2022, Dr. Christian Sußner, Head of the Department of Environment, Technology and Construction at the Ludwigsburg District Office, and Ludwigsburg Mayor Andrea Schwarz presented the schools with awards for the previous project phase for the first time. Despite corona, the schools were very active and had dealt with various climate protection topics. They reported on this at the award ceremony.

2nd premium event

At the 2nd award ceremony on April 18, 2023 at the Erich-Bracher-Schule in Pattonville, the project schools were once again recognized for their climate protection activities. One after the other, they presented their creatively implemented campaigns on the topics of climate protection and sustainability. The certificates were presented by Ms. Andrea Schwarz, Mayor of the City of Ludwigsburg, and Mr. Carsten Scholz, Deputy Head of the Department of Environment, Technology and Construction at the Ludwigsburg District Office.

Continuation of the project decided by the district council committee

In March 2024, the members of the district council committee for environment and technology (AUT) decided to continue the "Energy-saving models at schools in the district of Ludwigsburg" project.

The project can now boast many successes: The establishment of energy services, janitor training, building inspections, thermal imaging camera tours, bike checks and project days raised awareness among the school community and achieved measurable results. In 2023, energy savings of around 9% compared to the previous year were recorded for the district schools alone. This corresponds to around €127,000.

3rd premium event

The 3rd award event took place on April 16, 2024 in the Feuerseemensa on the school campus in Ludwigbsurg. Designed as a World Café, it motivated the pupils present to get into conversation with each other. Using materials they had brought with them, the energy teams gave a clear presentation of their climate protection activities and were once again recognized for their efforts.

District Administrator Dietmar Allgaier and Ludwigsburg's Mayor of Construction Andrea Schwarz joined in the welcome via video message:

The sponsors of the project

The financing of the awards for the schools is made possible by three sponsors: the Environmental and Nature Conservation Foundation of Kreissparkasse Ludwigsburg, Stadtwerke Ludwigsburg-Kornwestheim (SWLB) and Bietigheim-Bissingen (SWBB). We would like to thank the sponsors for their generous support.

Project sponsor

The project "Energy saving models at schools in the district of Ludwigsburg" is funded by the "Energy saving models" municipal guideline of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection and has been implemented in 12 schools (from primary to vocational schools) for a period of four years since March 1, 2021 (funding code: 67K12672).

The associated starter package, which is also funded, is being implemented as part of the project. It supports the educational work on climate protection at the participating schools from March 1, 2023 for a period of two years (funding reference: 67K22936).

With the National Climate Initiative, the German government has been initiating and funding numerous projects that contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions since 2008. Its programs and projects cover a broad spectrum of climate protection activities: From the development of long-term strategies to concrete assistance and investment-based funding measures. This diversity is a guarantee for good ideas. The National Climate Initiative helps to anchor climate protection on the ground. It benefits consumers as well as companies, local authorities and educational institutions.

Further information can be found on the homepage of the National Climate Initiative or on the homepage of the project management organization ZUG.

This project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection on the basis of a resolution of the German Bundestag.

Educational program for daycare centers and schools

Climate and environmental education with the LEA

With its educational program, the LEA brings the topics of climate and environmental protection to daycare centers and schools.

The program provides children and young people with age-appropriate information on energy, electricity and the environment so that they can argue, make decisions and take action. The program is funded by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of the Environment and the district of Ludwigsburg and is therefore free of charge for local authorities, schools and daycare centers.

Further information and the current program can be found in the information brochure "Environmental education for children and young people" or from the LEA.

Learning from and with nature

There is a lot for children and young people to discover in the forests of the Ludwigsburg district. The district's foresters provide school classes with direct access to the topics of nature and climate protection. Families can gain an insight into the local forest through forest experience and educational trails. The forest education offers are embedded in the holistic concept of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).

Here you will find further information and offers of forest education in the district of Ludwigsburg.
