Means of transport for the mobility transition

No other form of transportation leaves as little footprint on the environment as walking and cycling. But there are also climate-friendly alternatives to the car for longer distances.

Cycling

Cycling is fun, keeps you fit, is inexpensive and, as an alternative to car traffic, makes an important contribution to climate protection. This is why the district of Ludwigsburg promotes cycling on many levels - both by expanding the infrastructure and with numerous participatory campaigns such as the free bike check and cycling fun campaigns (e-bike training) or the CITY CYCLING campaign.
Here you can find all the information about cycling in the district.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

The more people travel by bus (111gCO2 per passenger kilometer) or train (85gCO2 per passenger kilometer) instead of by car (152gCO2 per passenger kilometer), the fewer emissions are emitted for their mobility (data from the Federal Environment Agency).
To make this change possible for everyone, the district of Ludwigsburg is committed to improving services and pricing.
An overview of bus and rail transport activities in the district of Ludwigsburg can be found here.

Sharing models

Up to now, we in Germany have mainly used vehicles that we own ourselves for our mobility. The average operating time of a car per day is only around 45 minutes(Mobility in Germany - Results Report). The rest of the time it remains unused and takes up space. If we share means of transportation in the future, emissions for the production and use of parking infrastructure, for example, can be saved - sharing models are therefore becoming increasingly popular and are available in a variety of forms.

If you have visitors and would like to go on a bike tour together, or want to save time on the way from the station to work, you can also use the RegioRad Stuttgart rental bikes at 31 stations in the district of Ludwigsburg. You can find an overview of all locations here.

There are three tariffs with different price structures.
Rule of thumb: If you already have a polygoCard, it is best to use the polygo tariff - the annual fee of €3 is credited to you as a starting balance and the first 30 minutes (bike) or 15 minutes (pedelec) are always free. Everyone else is best to try out the Light tariff: There is no annual fee here, billing is based on minutes.
You can register for use here.

The way it works at the RegioRad Stuttgart stations is actually quite simple:

  • Borrow a bike ...
By polygoCard: Tap on the display and hold your registered polygoCard to it when prompted. Now you can open the lock by pressing the red lock button and pulling out the station cable on the right-hand side - done! Of course, you can also use the polygoCard to rent a bike via the terminal.
By app or phone: Simply enter the 5-digit bike number in the RegioRad app or call the phone number on the bike. Then just tap on the bike's display, press the red lock button and pull out the lock cable. With the RegioRad app, you can even reserve a bike 45 minutes in advance.
  • ... ride ...
The saddle height can be quickly adjusted using the quick release. Lights are already on: off you go! Even short breaks are no problem. Simply lock the RegioRad with the lock on the rear wheel and answer "yes" to the question about taking a break on the display. Open the bike again later with a polygoCard - if you don't have one, you will receive an opening code when you lock it
  • ... and return it.
You can do this at any station, even if it is already full. Simply press the red lock button and lock the bike to the station (or to yourself). Then ignore the question about the pause on the display and wait for the confirmation "Return successful".

In addition to the possibility of renting a bike, the bike station at the west exit of Ludwigsburg station (Pflugfelder Straße 19) also offers repairs and services for your bike. More information can be found here.

As an alternative to bicycles, electrically powered scooters ("e-scooters") have also been available in the city of Ludwigsburg since April 2021. Requirements, costs and further information can be found here.

Fewer cars on the road and in parking lots makes room for valuable living space. If you don't have your own car, you can use the various car-sharing and rental car services to hire a vehicle if required.
The following services are available in the Ludwigsburg district:

There are over 33 million employees throughout Germany, almost half of whom commute by car and usually alone. You can use various platforms to find carpoolers for your daily commute as well as for individual journeys, thus saving emissions and money.
If you would like to try out carpooling, there are the following online portals, for example:
