Principle:
There is a legal entitlement to individual training support in accordance with this law for training that corresponds to aptitude, aptitude and performance if the trainee does not otherwise have the necessary means of subsistence and training.
A good education is the basis for professional success. However, families are not always able to provide sufficient financial support for students or pupils. This is where BAföG can help.
The aim is to give all young people the opportunity to complete an education that matches their abilities and interests, regardless of their social and economic situation. The following questions must be clarified before a decision can be made on a BAföG application:
- Is the chosen course eligible for funding?
- Does the applicant meet the personal eligibility requirements?
- Are the educational needs not covered by the applicant's own income and assets or by the income of a spouse, registered partner or parents?
The answers to these questions determine whether someone can receive BAföG and how much monthly funding they will receive. With the 2019 BAföG reform, even more people are entitled to the grant as, among other things, the income allowances have been increased. These are, for example, the amounts of income that parents do not have to use for their children's education under BAföG. It is therefore worth checking whether funding is possible. There is a lot of helpful information on this page. For binding clarification of individual questions, it is best to seek advice from the relevant education funding office at an early stage.

None, but BAföG is only granted from the start of training, but at the earliest from the month in which you submit your application. If you submit your application as completely as possible, a decision on your application can usually be made quickly.
If the complete documents are available, the processing time is usually within a few weeks.
Decisions on educational assistance benefits are made on the basis of a written or electronic application.
This means that in future, all declarations for BAföG applications, including income declarations from parents and life partners, can be submitted both analog and digitally, by email or via "BAföG Digital" without a signature or eID function.
The written form requirement previously regulated in Section 46 (1) BAföG will be replaced by a text form requirement. This means that a handwritten signature will no longer be required for BAföG applications in future. The handwritten signature can be replaced by simply stating the applicant's name. However, this must be done to secure the declaration made.
An application is only valid if the applicant or their legal representative has stated their name at the end of the application and the application has been received by the Office for Educational Support.
The following methods are possible for submitting declarations when applying for BAföG:
- Declarations stating the name sent by post or fax,
- Declarations submitted digitally via the online application assistant "BAföG Digital" using a user account, and
- Declarations that are sent digitally via e-mail, to which a handwritten or electronically completed form is attached, e.g. as a pdf or as a jpeg, and which contains a name at the end.
