With the help of expressive sandwork, children who have been confronted with traumatic experiences from their home country or while fleeing are given a safe space to process these experiences. The aim is to activate psychological self-healing powers and strengthen the children's resilience. This non-verbal method is particularly suitable for children who were traumatized at an early age and have difficulty expressing their feelings in words. By creatively designing scenes in the sand, positive memories can be awakened that promote a sense of control and self-efficacy.
Using a sandbox, various materials and play figures, the children depict and process their inner experiences. Around ten children between the ages of six and 13 take part in each round of the project. One session comprises eleven to twelve weekly appointments.
The volunteer facilitators play a central role in the project. Each accompanying person is there for one child at a time for the entire duration of the project. It is therefore important that they make time for all eleven appointments. Before the project begins, the companions receive comprehensive training from an experienced trainer. In addition, they receive further support during the project and have access to "supervision" and "intervision", two methods for reflection and quality improvement. At the end of the project, all volunteers receive a certificate.
An information event for all interested volunteers will take place on Thursday, January 22, 2026, at 4 p.m. Venue: Auf dem Wasen 9, 71640 Ludwigsburg, room 212.
