Since the deployment of the security service from October 2024, the police have only had to be called in a few cases due to passenger misconduct. Problems were usually resolved on the spot by the security staff in a de-escalating manner.
Guests and drivers of the night buses feel safer
The positive feedback also shows that not only the passengers but also the drivers of the night buses feel safer thanks to the deployment of security staff. They also support the drivers in checking tickets. Another positive aspect is the reduction in vandalism damage thanks to regular checks by security staff before and after the start of service.
The deployment of security staff quickly led to an improvement in the situation on the night bus routes N46, N56 and N58. However, the night bus route N44, which serves a club and is often used by passengers under the influence of alcohol, is particularly noticeable. As the situation here has calmed down somewhat in recent months, the district administration believes that, as with the other three night bus routes, the deployment of security staff can be reduced to ten hours per day in future.
Costs expected to fall to 60,000 euros in 2026
The costs for the security staff will amount to around EUR 82,000 gross in 2025 and are expected to fall to around EUR 60,000 gross in 2026 due to the reduction in deployment.
For the new transport services to be awarded from January 1, 2026, a digital video surveillance system is mandatory for all new vehicles. Until the entire bus fleet is fully equipped with video surveillance, further developments will be monitored and security staff will remain on board at a reduced level. If the situation improves in the long term, the district can decide within a month whether the use of security staff can be ended completely.
