Connecting cycle path between ART LOOP and SCULPTOURA opened

On Monday, April 20, 2026, the new connecting route between the ART LOOP sculpture cycle path in the district of Ludwigsburg and the SCULPTOURA in the district of Böblingen was officially opened. District Administrator Dietmar Allgaier and District Administrator Roland Bernhard as well as the mayors of the towns and municipalities along the route took part in the inauguration of this special inter-municipal project.

District Administrator Allgaier welcomed those present and emphasized the importance of the new connection: "With today's inauguration, we are opening a new chapter in the successful cooperation between our two districts. This link was not created overnight, but rather the result of a joint journey with several stages - supported by close coordination, mutual trust and a clear goal in mind. The fact that we were able to realize this project together today is a strong sign of what is possible when we join forces and keep moving forward."

District Administrator Bernhard also emphasized the importance of the cross-district cooperation and praised the project as an important contribution to strengthening cycling and cultural tourism in the region: "The SCULPTOURA in the district of Böblingen is now in its twelfth year. This success shows that leisure tourism offers are arriving on our doorstep and that our region has the potential to become an excursion destination. I am delighted that this very special outdoor exhibition is now becoming even more attractive with the connection and extension across district borders."

Lord Mayor Michael Makurath also agrees. "The linking of the two sections of cycle path stands for the connecting and cross-border nature that is also inherent to culture and a natural area such as the Glemstal. Combining the enjoyment of culture and nature with cycle tourism creates added value for our region. The town of Ditzingen is delighted to be able to offer the hopefully numerous cyclists interested in culture and art on the stage between ART LOOP and SCULPTOURA not only art in public spaces, such as the 'Weltenfahrerbrunnen', but also the opportunity to stop off and relax."

ART LOOP and SCULPTOURA: art and landscape in harmony

The idea of linking the two art cycle paths dates back to the conception phase of the ART LOOP. The potential to link the themes of cycling, art and landscape across district borders was recognized early on. In 2023, the project was fleshed out at a meeting between the two districts and put into practice.

The ART LOOP itself is an approximately 35-kilometre-long sculpture cycle path through the municipalities of Schwieberdingen, Eberdingen and Hemmingen. Along the route, seven sculptures created especially for the cycle path by artists from the Baden-Württemberg Artists' Association present art in public spaces. Since its opening in 2022, the cycle path has enjoyed great popularity.

New connection creates new opportunities

The new, approximately 15-kilometre-long connecting route between Schwieberdingen and Leonberg now provides a direct link to the SCULPTOURA, which is one of the most important art trails in the region with around 100 sculptures. The route leads through the scenic Glemstal valley and mainly uses existing paths such as the Glemsmühlenweg and the main route of the Stuttgart e-bike region.

Added value for tourism and the region

The connection creates a wide range of added value: in future, cyclists will be able to experience both artificial cycle paths in one tour, while at the same time providing new impetus for the region's tourism development. The use of existing infrastructure also underlines the sustainable approach of the project.
