The Ludwigsburg-Stuttgart organic model region is supported by an advisory board. It is made up of farmers, representatives of farmers' associations and organic associations, players from the trade and processing sector as well as representatives of the three cooperation partners, the Ludwigsburg district, the City of Stuttgart Department of Economic Development and the Association for Agricultural Training. This ensures that the interests of the entire regional value chain are represented.
After the first advisory board meeting in March, it is clear that one of the initial goals is to increase awareness of the Ludwigsburg-Stuttgart organic model region. To this end, the organic model region will present itself at markets and in transparent production facilities as soon as it is possible again. Agriculture will not be neglected either: a series of events for farmers interested in organic farming is being planned and the first dates will be announced soon. Projects for more organic food in out-of-home catering will be implemented under the leadership of the Nutrition Center Mittlerer Neckar of the Ludwigsburg District Office. The nutrition center already has many years of experience in the area of sustainable nutrition for schools and daycare centers. "We, the nutrition center and the organic model region, organized an initial networking meeting for canteens and cafeterias back in February. We were delighted to see how much interest there is and how much is already being done in the organic sector," says Regional Manager Bezler.
Organic is the trend: the demand for organic is growing steadily, but regional or German produce is not yet sufficient to meet the demand. The district of Ludwigsburg and the city of Stuttgart are no exception. Ten percent of Baden-Württemberg's population live here, so there is a large sales market. However, according to a 2016 survey by the State Statistical Office, the proportion of organically farmed land is 5.1%, well below the state average of 9.3%. In accordance with the state government's key points for the protection of insects, the expansion of organic farming in Baden-Württemberg to 30 to 40 percent by 2030 is a goal of the state government. The organic model regions support this goal by promoting domestic demand and generating new sales channels for organic products. At the same time, organic farming promotes biodiversity.
