District office on the way to becoming a bicycle-friendly employer

The Ludwigsburg District Office is on its way to becoming a bicycle-friendly employer and is introducing a mileage allowance for cyclists from January 2023.

The district administration is thus implementing a further building block in the "official mobility management" concept and taking another step towards the goal of climate neutrality. 30 cents for every kilometer of one-way travel to work, capped at 80 euros per month, similar to the public transport travel allowance. With this simple but very effective measure, the Ludwigsburg District Office wants to motivate its 2,300 employees to make greater use of bicycles for their daily commute to work. Around 13 percent of employees currently cycle to work. During the Corona period, a general upward trend was noticeable. "We now need to take this momentum with us," says District Administrator Dietmar Allgaier, hoping that even more employees will get on their bikes. The aim is to increase the proportion of cyclists among the district administration's employees to 24% by 2030.

A mobility survey in 2021 revealed that a financial incentive would certainly be suitable for getting more people on their bikes. The district office would like to give employees a certain amount of freedom of choice between using public transport and cycling when granting subsidies. Up to now, there has been a maximum subsidy of 80 euros per month for monthly and annual public transport tickets. The subsidy for cycling is also based on this. Each month, employees can decide which subsidy will better support their sustainable mobility.

The introduction of a bicycle mileage allowance is another important step towards climate-neutral administration and a component of official mobility management at the Ludwigburg District Office. The district office wants to do even more to make itself more bicycle-friendly: New bicycle parking facilities and functional spaces have been and will continue to be implemented, and a RegioRad station directly at the district office is already a reality. Various options for climate-friendly mobility were presented at a mobility day: from the carpooling platform to public transport advice and information on bicycle subsidies to the use of company pedelecs.

"Something is happening in official mobility management and should continue to develop in the future," says Tina Prietz, representative for climate-neutral administration.

Info:

  • Cycling avoids around 138 grams ofCO2 per kilometer travelled
  • Employees who regularly cycle to work are absent from work at least one day less per year on average.
  • The district administration office also benefits financially from a higher cycling mode share due to the potential savings in parking spaces and the increased health and fitness of employees.
