Climate protection firmly anchored in everyday school life

The city and district of Ludwigsburg are honoring eleven schools as part of the "Energy-saving models at schools in the district of Ludwigsburg" project. The project motivates schools to firmly anchor climate protection and sustainability in everyday school life.

A diverse group of approximately 40 individuals stands together in an outdoor setting, smiling at the camera. They represent various ages and backgrounds, with some dressed in formal attire and others in casual clothing. Some participants are seated, while others stand in rows behind them.

A diverse group of six individuals stands together, holding a large red heart-shaped sign displaying the amount €72,000. They are gathered in a professional setting, likely celebrating a donation or fundraising achievement. The background includes banners related to the event.

The cooperation project between the city and district of Ludwigsburg started in October 2021 with schools from primary to vocational schools. At this year's award ceremony on April 18, the energy teams from the participating schools reported on their climate protection activities and were rewarded for their efforts. Carsten Scholz, Deputy Head of Department for Environment, Technology and Construction at the Ludwigsburg District Office, and Ludwigsburg Mayor Andrea Schwarz presented the awards at a ceremony at the Erich Bracher School in Kornwestheim-Pattonville.

The prize money of up to 1,500 euros was made possible by funding from the Environmental and Nature Conservation Foundation of Kreissparkasse Ludwigsburg and Stadtwerke Ludwigsburg-Kornwestheim and Bietigheim-Bissingen. Special thanks were expressed to them at the event. At the event, Isabel Kurz, Director of the Board Staff Department and representative of the Kreissparkasse Foundation, emphasized that "sustainability in all its facets has always played a special role at Kreissparkasse Ludwigsburg and its foundations. We have therefore been investing considerable sums in numerous environmental and nature conservation projects for many years. The multi-year climate protection project presented here is supported with foundation funds totaling 72,000 euros. Our Environmental and Nature Conservation Foundation is thus making a significant contribution to the successful implementation of the climate protection project at eleven schools in the Ludwigsburg district."

The "Energy-saving models at schools in the district of Ludwigsburg" project is aimed at schools that want to actively promote climate protection and sustainability and motivate others to join in. As in the previous project year, the participating schools implemented various climate protection activities based on a predefined catalog of measures. To do this, the energy teams looked for new members and further developed the previous tasks at their school. The energy teams are made up of pupils, teachers and the technical building management team.

  • In the last phase of the project, a lot happened at the participating schools on the topic of climate protection. One example: an energy service was introduced in classes at four other schools. It works in a similar way to the blackboard service, but on the subject of saving energy, such as switching off appliances and lights and turning down the heating. The energy teams put up posters with energy-saving tips in the classrooms and educated the school community about climate-friendly behavior.
  • A second example is thermal imaging camera tours, which some schools undertook together with the Ludwigsburg district energy agency. The pupils looked at the heat requirements of the school building and carried out a corresponding inspection tour.

At the end of February, the schools submitted a project report, which was assessed by a jury. "The results of the reports clearly show that the schools were very motivated to get involved in different areas of climate protection," says project manager Ellinor Hoyer. "Each school is going its own way and has once again overcome different hurdles this year to give energy saving more space in the school - that makes me very happy."

A few facts about the last project phase:

  • All schools set up an energy team, some with new members.
  • 10 schools actively promoted the project to their teaching staff.
  • 10 schools (4 more than in the previous year) have an energy service at their school (similar to the blackboard service, only on the subject of saving energy: e.g. switching off appliances and lights, turning down the heating). To this end, they put up posters with energy-saving tips in the classrooms and informed the school community about climate-friendly actions.
  • 9 schools provided information within the school about the project and about energy-saving and climate protection options and recruited new participants.
  • 10 schools carried out public relations work on the project via press articles or information on the website.
  • 7 schools (2 more than in the previous year) borrowed the energy measurement kit and/or carried out an inspection tour.
  • 11 schools dealt with the topics of climate change, climate protection and energy saving in lessons or on excursions.
  • 8 schools (3 more than in the previous year) were particularly motivated and carried out topic-specific project days.

The award event focused on the joint task of climate protection and not on ranking the schools. The meeting and the exchange of ideas between the schools showed once again how versatile, creative and often easy to implement climate protection can be.

The "Energy-saving models in schools" project entered its third phase in March. A new catalog of measures serves as a guideline for the schools' next steps.
