Some people use the nice weather as an opportunity to switch from car to bike; others want to get more exercise; for still others, environmental protection is a priority. Another reason for switching from car to bike is a stress-free commute. The increased satisfaction of commuters who cycle to work compared to car drivers has now also been scientifically proven.
The University of East Anglia in Norwich analyzed the data of 18,000 people in a long-term study and found out: While the general satisfaction of car drivers decreases as the length of their commute increases, the opposite is true for bicycle commuters. In addition, car commuters were 13% more likely than cyclists to say they were constantly stressed and had difficulty concentrating at work. Scientists at Tübingen University Hospital were also able to provide medical evidence of the positive effect of cycling on the human psyche. They examined the blood of healthy and depressed people before and after a 30-minute cycling session. While the relevant blood values of the depressed people were significantly worse than those of the healthy comparison group beforehand, the values normalized after cycling.
District Administrator Dr. Haas is also in favour of renewed participation in CITY CYCLING and emphasized: "For us in the district of Ludwigsburg, the bicycle is an important building block for sustainable and future-proof mobility. By taking part in STADTRA-DELN, we want to show how easy it is to cover everyday distances quickly and easily by bike. After all, the bicycle is a much faster alternative to the car, especially for short journeys." "The campaign is extremely popular and is well received by the participants," reports the district's cycling officer, Michael Ptock. This is also shown by the number of kilometers cycled and the number of participants in the district - this increased around fivefold in 2018 compared to 2017. A total of 160 teams from the district of Ludwigsburg took part last year and were able to save over 83 tons of climate-damaging CO2. In addition, the district of Ludwigsburg cycled 586,565 kilometers, taking first place in Baden-Württemberg ahead of the state capital Stuttgart and the district of Heilbronn.
