Asperg, Kornwestheim and Möglingen are each participating with one school as well as Remseck am Neckar at the start of the "Climate protection in schools" (KiS) project. There are also eight schools run by the district.
As part of the project, the pupils, with the support of their teachers and school administrators, will take a close look at their everyday school life and school structures and work together to make them more climate-friendly. The focus is on the areas of buildings and energy, mobility and consumption. In addition, various educational offers on the topic of climate protection can be taken up in order to experience content as practically as possible.
Strengthening the self-efficacy of children and young people
Wolfgang Bechtle, Head of the Department of Environment, Technology and Construction, emphasized the importance of the project and stressed that climate protection is a generational task in which the young generation will shape the world of tomorrow. "The participating pupils can experience self-efficacy, particularly in concrete actions, and thus look to the future with hope for all of us," said Bechtle about the project.
The project receives prominent support from climate journalist Louisa Schneider as patron. She also motivated the participants via video message: "On my research trips, I was able to meet people all over the world who are courageously standing up for climate protection. They show that Change is possible today and it is already happening. I'm really looking forward to getting to know you all. Because only together - with local authorities, schools and us as the younger generation - can we really make climate protection part of everyday life."
Expansion of the predecessor project "Energy-saving models in schools"
"Climate protection in schools" builds on the predecessor project "Energy-saving models at schools in the district of Ludwigsburg", which has been carried out at schools run by the district and the city of Ludwigsburg since 2021 and was completed in summer 2025. With KiS, schools run by local authorities now also have the opportunity to benefit from the experience and establish climate protection in everyday school life with the support of their local authorities.
Pupils, teachers and school administrators from Erich-Bracher-Schule, Oscar-Walcker-Schule and Paul-Aldinger-Schule gave an insight into the practical implementation. They had also taken part in the previous project. They reported on the successes and challenges they experienced in their commitment to a more climate-friendly school.
Sustainable support from strong partners
Like the previous project, KiS is funded by the Environmental and Nature Conservation Foundation of Kreissparkasse Ludwigsburg. In the school years 2025/26 to 2028/29, the foundation will donate 20,000 euros each to finance attractive educational offers.
Dr. Heinz-Werner Schulte, CEO of Kreissparkasse Ludwigsburg, explained at the launch event: "Climate and environmental protection is an investment in the future in order to make our district a sustainable place to live for us and future generations. We are setting the best example ourselves. We are continuously saving valuable resources and expanding CO2-neutral energy generation plants. We also support our customers and many charitable projects in the energy transition. I am delighted that the pupils are actively helping to shape climate protection with new ideas in this project. We have already supported the previous project with 72,000 euros."
Committed project start and looking forward to the results
Project coordinator Jennifer Häusler from the Ludwigsburg District Office is looking forward to the start of the project: "Climate protection continues to be a topic that children and young people are very interested in. It's great that we can now reach even more schoolchildren with KiS. I'm looking forward to creative activities at the schools and exchanging ideas with each other."
