Opening of the first organic market in the region

The first organic weekly market in the region and one of very few in the whole of Germany opened on Marienplatz in Stuttgart on April 23. Many organic goods are also available there directly from the Ludwigsburg-Stuttgart organic model region.

A market vendor hands a customer fresh produce, including zucchini, potatoes, and apples, displayed in green baskets. Both individuals are wearing face masks. The scene captures a vibrant, lively atmosphere of a farmer's market.

Vegetables from the Enzkreis and the Ludwigsburg-Stuttgart organic model region are available at this stand.

The demand for organic food has been rising steadily for years. After consumers expressed the need for a purely organic market, planning and the search for organic farms began a year ago. The Ludwigsburg-Stuttgart Organic Model Region, which is part of the Agriculture Department at the Ludwigsburg District Office, was a coordinating body that took over the planning together with Märkte Stuttgart GmbH.

The organic market now takes place every 2nd and 4th Friday of the month (next dates 14.05., 28.05., 11.06., 25.06.) from 11.30 am to 7 pm. This makes the market attractive for late risers as well as for shopping after work. Although the market could not be opened with a ceremony last Friday, visitors were already flocking to the market during the set-up phase and were very satisfied at the end of the market day.

With fresh vegetables from the region and neighboring districts, honey, packaging-free muesli, soups from a jar (for when things need to be quick) and delicious baked goods, the organic market is not just for weekend shopping. On the centrally located and well-connected Marienplatz, you can linger a while in the first spring sunshine with coffee, crêpes and tarte flambée. Everything on offer at the market is organically produced.

The farms present at the market come from the Ludwigsburg-Stuttgart organic model region or neighboring districts. The market is a unique opportunity for organic producers and marketers to open up new sales channels. New cooperations have also been formed between farmers: For example, the farms usually take products from other producers for their stall and offer them, so that the district of Ludwigsburg is also represented under the market umbrellas of farms from the Enzkreis district, for example. The youngest of the agricultural market suppliers, Luka Schwehr from Mühlacker, is currently setting up a vegetable growing business while still training as a master craftsman and has overcome one of the first hurdles with the help of the market: securing the sale of his first own products.

Like all markets, the organic market offers visitors one thing above all: the chance to talk directly to the farmers who produce our food.
