Telekom starts fiber optic expansion in Gemmrigheim - Around 85 kilometers of fiber optics and 19 distributors for faster Internet

Construction is now underway. Over 720 Gemmrigheim residents have already opted for a fiber optic connection from Telekom. In total, over 1,450 households in the expansion area can benefit from a gigabit connection. Around 85 kilometers of fiber optics and 19 fiber optic network distributors (NVt) will ensure higher bandwidths from the fall. The maximum download speed will increase to up to 1 gigabit per second (GBit/s). This means that customers will have a connection that allows them to stream, game and work from home at the same time without any problems.

"I am delighted that work is now starting in Gemmrigheim," says Mayor Dr. Jörg Frauhammer. "Fast internet has become an integral part of our citizens' lives - both privately and in business. It is a locational advantage in a digital society. With a record-breaking pre-marketing rate of well over 200% of the necessary interested parties, the citizens of our municipality have recognized that fibre optic connections are the infrastructure with which all current and future requirements can be met."

District Administrator Dietmar Allgaier emphasizes: "From today, a new era begins for large parts of Gemmrigheim. Fiber optic connections to the home are the most modern infrastructure available. I am delighted that the entire district is making great strides forward in providing fiber optics to its citizens."

"I am also delighted that so many interested parties have registered for a fiber optic connection - the pre-marketing target was more than doubled. Now we can get started. This is Deutsche Telekom's largest fiber optic project in Germany," explains Sabine Wittlinger, Partner Manager at Deutsche Telekom. She thanks all those responsible in the municipality, the district and the region for their support. "The first households in Gemmrigheim will be able to use their fiber optic connection this fall. The rapid expansion is possible thanks to the good cooperation with the municipality," says Wittlinger. Extensive civil engineering work is required to lay the fiber optic cables.

"The example of Gemmrigheim shows that, thanks to our cooperation program, even smaller towns can be expanded at an early stage if there is sufficient demand," explains Hans-Jürgen Bahde, Managing Director of Gigabit Region Stuttgart GmbH (GRS) and broadband representative for the Stuttgart region. "A major advantage of our cooperation with Deutsche Telekom is that every location, regardless of its size, has the opportunity to have fiber to the home."

Cooperation between Deutsche Telekom and the Gigabit Region Stuttgart

The expansion in Gemmrigheim in the north of the Ludwigsburg district is the result of the cooperation between Gigabit Region Stuttgart GmbH and Deutsche Telekom. The focus of the gigabit project is the partnership-based expansion of the ultra-fast fiber optic network. By 2025, 99% of the population should also be able to use mobile communications (LTE). There are also plans to rapidly build a high-performance 5G network. The contract is unique in Germany in this dimension. Other companies will be able to use the digital infrastructure that is now being created at fair and standard market conditions. The program is also intended to stimulate investments in fibre optics by other market participants.

The expansion area currently comprises 174 municipalities in the city of Stuttgart and the five neighboring districts of Böblingen, Esslingen, Göppingen, Ludwigsburg and Rems-Murr. Around 2.8 million people live in this metropolitan area. Around 140,000 companies are located there.
