Light rail on the test bench: LUCIE in a cost-benefit check

Planning for the LUCIE light rail system in the Ludwigsburg district is progressing. The so-called standardized evaluation is currently underway. This is a standardized nationwide procedure that examines whether the economic benefits of a project outweigh the costs. It is therefore also known as a cost-benefit check. The results for the preliminary operation of LUCIE are expected in October 2025.

An empty railway track stretches into a green landscape, flanked by trees on either side. A sign labeled "LÜ CIE" and "Ludwigsburger City Express" appears prominently at the top, indicating a transportation service. The scene is serene and showcases a tranquil setting.

The standardized assessment is a prerequisite for federal and state funding. It not only examines economic aspects, but also the economic, social and ecological benefits. Among other things, passenger forecasts, CO₂ savings, travel time gains and the impact on traffic and the environment are taken into account.

The study is therefore more than just a financial calculation. It shows what added value a light rail system will bring to the region in the long term and whether this justifies the costs.

"For the LUCIE light rail system, the calculations to date indicate that the benefits clearly outweigh the costs. This would not only confirm the transport and ecological importance of the project, but also create the basis for extensive funding from the federal and state governments," says light rail manager Michael Ilk.

"The publication of the results at the end of October will therefore be an important step in securing further planning and advancing the implementation of the light rail in the Ludwigsburg district."
