Platform for people with disabilities organizes aid donation campaign for Ukraine-Direkthilfe: A second life for old wheelchairs - Municipal Disability Commissioner of the Ludwigsburg district takes over patronage

"There is a lack of wheelchairs, rollators, walking aids, orthoses, prostheses and rehabilitation items in general," says Alexander Lang, describing the situation in the Ukrainian district hospital in Ternopil in the east of the country. The accessibility consultant runs the professional internet platform YouLife.Rocks, a start-up for the needs of people with disabilities and chronic illnesses, which is also being used by more and more companies to present their products and services. The 55-year-old is now using his numerous contacts to make an urgent appeal for donations to the small hospital, to which he has direct contact. In this way, aids such as rollators, crutches and wheelchairs that are no longer needed but still functional are given a second life.

Three individuals with disabilities are posed in an outdoor setting. Two men are seated in wheelchairs, while a woman stands between them, holding a white cane. The background features a modern building and greenery, highlighting an inclusive environment.

"An employee of Speidel GmbH in Illingen made contact with the Franciscan order that runs the hospital through his Ukrainian relatives. Since then, the employee and his boss, supported by the Rotary Club Mühlacker - Enzkreis, have been organizing aid transports time and again," says Lang.

At the Polish border, the goods are handed over directly to the monk who, as a man of the church, is allowed to cross the border more easily. The aid is desperately needed. "Many of us can't imagine what it means when there is no adequate medical care or when a hospital only has electricity for a maximum of six hours a day and rarely has running water," says Lang. "You also don't want to think about what daily life is like for a person with a disability when the aids they need every day are missing, their wheelchair is broken or they can't even go out the door because everything is bombed out," says the expert, who is a wheelchair user himself.

"It's perfect that we were able to win Claudia Lychacz, the municipal representative for the interests of people with disabilities in the Ludwigsburg district, as patron for this project, who will actively support us in its implementation," Lang proudly emphasizes.

"It was a great pleasure and a matter of course for me to take on the patronage," says Claudia Lychacz. "Everyone can make a contribution here. Be it with used aids, with support through a pick-up trip, with a financial donation or by sharing and spreading the word about this campaign. Since 2021, "#All" has been my working motto. I hope that many people will help to bring this motto to life for the fundraising campaign too."

Thanks to his close personal contacts, Alexander Lang knows exactly what the small hospital and other Franciscan properties need most at the moment. His urgent appeal: "In many households, there are aids that are no longer needed, such as rollators, crutches or wheelchairs, which are still in good condition. Do you have them too? We'll pick them up!"
