"Keyhole surgery" a focus of the Clinic for Urology at Ludwigsburg Hospital
The Urology Clinic at Ludwigsburg Hospital performs almost 2,500 operations a year. Around 4,600 patients are treated as outpatients and more than 2,500 as inpatients. This makes the clinic one of the largest urology clinics in Germany. Complex operations are performed, as well as all types of drug therapies including chemotherapy and immunotherapy. A particular focus of the Department of Urology is minimally invasive surgery ("keyhole surgery"). Since mid-2016, a robot-assisted surgical system has been used for prostate cancer, kidney tumors, bladder removal and reconstructive procedures. Another focus of the clinic is endoscopy, i.e. operations through the urethra. For this purpose, the clinic has modern thulium lasers for the enucleation of benign enlarged prostates and the removal of kidney and ureteral stones. State-of-the-art ultrasound equipment can be used to perform biopsies to diagnose prostate cancer. Senior physicians also supervise special consultation hours for urinary bladder emptying disorders, kidney stones and tumor diseases, to which the urologist can refer the patient.
