A virtual guide with a learning effect

A new digital colleague has now started work at the Ludwigsburg District Office: On the authority's homepage, a chat bot answers questions about the services in the district office. It is not yet omniscient, but with the help of many users, it is getting better every day.

A dialogue box displays information about vehicle registration and deregistration procedures, including tips for new and used vehicle owners. It contains sections labeled with instructions and an option to ask questions, alongside input fields for user interaction.

And lo and behold: it works! If you go to the homepage of the Ludwigsburg District Office, you will find a discreet box on the right-hand side with the words "Questions?". This is the new digital helper on the website; if you click on it, you can ask your questions there. And if you ask a relatively simple question, such as "Where can I register my car?", you will reliably receive a good answer and be referred to the vehicle registration office. However, as is always the case with artificial intelligence, the chat bot is not omniscient, but is constantly learning - the more users provide feedback if the answer is inadequate, the better the chat bot becomes.

Its starting repertoire includes topics from the state's own Service-BW portal, such as vehicle registration, economic hardship, disability and immigration, etc. These are supplemented by general information about the district office as well as small talk, weather and news from the district. Topics relating to dealing with the coronavirus are also still included.

The chat bot is provided by Komm.ONE and has been adapted to the needs of the district office. It is continuously developed and updated. The chat bot is accessed via an avatar on the District Office homepage. Questions to the chat bot can then be entered in text form in the welcome window. The chat bot answers them directly or forwards them to other websites. The virtual assistant is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week and thus makes an important contribution to informing citizens.
