70 years of the Basic Law - traveling exhibition "Mothers of the Basic Law"

Elisabeth Selbert, Helene Weber, Frieda Nadig and Helene Wessel were the only female members of the 65-strong Parliamentary Council that drafted the Basic Law in Bonn from September 1948 to June 1949. With Article 3, Paragraph 2 of the Basic Law ("Men and women shall have equal rights"), they fought for equal rights to be enshrined in the Basic Law. Without the commitment of the four women in the Parliamentary Council and the many women who campaigned for equal rights in public, this formulation would not have come about. A touring exhibition now traces the lives and work of the four mothers of the Basic Law and pays tribute to their political commitment. The exhibition will be touring the district three times from September 16 to December 22.

A stack of white-covered books featuring a double-headed eagle emblem. The top book displays the title "GRUNDGESETZ für die Bundesrepublik Deutschland" in bold letters, along with a horizontal black, red, and yellow stripe beneath the title, representing the German flag.

It will be on display at the University of Public Administration in Ludwigsburg, in the historic town hall of Großbottwar and in the Museum im Adler in the municipality of Benningen am Neckar. Visitors to the exhibition will be able to look back on the history of the creation of Article 3 of the Basic Law, experience the struggle of the mothers of the Basic Law and look ahead to the further implementation of equality between women and men.

All interested parties are welcome to attend the exhibition openings with interesting keynote speeches. Admission is free.

Exhibition concept and distribution: European Academy for Women in Politics and Business, Berlin, info[at]eaf-berlin.de

The Helene-Weber-Kolleg is a nationwide, cross-party network with which the Federal Ministry for Women's Affairs, together with the European Academy for Women in Politics and Business (EAF) Berlin, has been campaigning for more women in politics since 2011.

The Helene Weber College relies on several pillars to attract more women to politics: the Helene Weber Prize, mentoring and coaching, the traveling exhibition "Mothers of the Basic Law" as well as local campaigns and international exchange projects. Workshops for schoolgirls, migrant women and young refugee women to strengthen political participation are also offered.
