Over 10,000 cyclists took part in this year's three-week "Stadtradeln" cycling competition and, with over two million kilometers cycled, set a strong example for cycling culture in the Ludwigsburg district. The district has been taking part in the international campaign since 2017 and enjoys annual growth. "The fact that we have broken the two million kilometer barrier this year is really something special," says Lisa Röthinger, Cycling Officer for the Ludwigsburg district. "A great team of coordinators contributed to this, who eagerly advertised in their towns and municipalities and set up many campaigns of their own!"
The results in detail: 34 out of 39 district municipalities took part in the competition this year (previous year: 25 municipalities), a total of 10,168 cyclists were on the road (previous year: 8,344 cyclists) and cycled 2,261,001 kilometers (previous year: 1.83 million). In purely mathematical terms, this saved 348 tons of CO2 (compared to journeys by car; previous year 268 tons). This currently puts the district in first place in its size category nationwide - however, the campaign period is still running in some municipalities and the final evaluation will not take place until the end of the entire competition.
Across the district, 170 members of parliament have taken part in the city cycling campaign, including 13 mayors - that is around 21 percent of all members of local parliaments. Decisions for cycling infrastructure and thus practical climate protection on the ground are also a focus of this competition. The municipality with the most bicycle-active municipal parliament will be honored by Climate Alliance in a separate prize category.
The following municipalities, teams and cyclists will be honored by the district:
Most active cycling municipality (most kilometers per inhabitant)
- 1st place: Oberriexingen (11.71 km per inhabitant)
- 2nd place: Schwieberdingen (9.55 km per inhabitant)
- 3rd place: Markgröningen (7.78 km per inhabitant)
Largest teams (total kilometers)
- 1st place: Mörike-Gymnasium Ludwigsburg (365 cyclists, 53,141 km)
- 2nd place: W&W Group (194 cyclists, 50,868 km)
- 3rd place: Bosch@Si (142 cyclists, 45,292 km)
Best individual cyclists (total kilometers)
- 1st place: Rainer Breimaier (Team: Die Grünen, 2,433 km)
- 2nd place: Hardy Schulte (Team: ADFC - LB radelt, 2,288 km)
- 3rd place: Timo Köhler (Team: Im Esper, 2,286 km)
The two district cycling officers, Madeleine Janker and Lisa Röthinger, will personally present the prizes to the winners in the coming weeks. Ten bike packages will also be raffled off among all participants in the city cycling event as a thank you. There will also be a prize draw for this year's first ever photo campaign: Anyone who has visited and photographed at least six of the city cycling banners in the district can hope to win one of five 50-euro vouchers for local bicycle dealers.
154 employees of the district administration office also formed a team and finished in 4th place in the district with a total of 35,164 kilometers (previous year 29,228 km).
District Administrator Dietmar Allgaier is delighted with the good result, both for his own team and for the district as a whole: "I would like to thank everyone who cycles - and not just during the city cycling event - and thus makes a contribution to climate protection. We take this as an incentive to push ahead with the expansion of the cycling infrastructure and thus further improve the conditions for cycling. I would like to congratulate all the winners of City Cycling 2022!"
The campaign took place in the district for the sixth time and participation is also planned for next year.
