With more than 200,000 orchard trees, the district of Ludwigsburg is still one of the strongholds of orchard cultivation, with many stakeholders putting their heart and soul into the subject. Thomas Wörner is one of them. With "StoP", the Sachsenheim Orchard Project, he has set himself the goal of restoring the orchards from Sachsenheim to Kleinsachsenheim, Spielberg and Ochsenbach to a healthy state.
Project "StoP": 1,000 new plants planted in seven years
Even if it may not seem like it at first glance, orchards need to be maintained. Mistletoe infestation and pruning orchard trees are only a small part of the task. In cooperation with the Großsachsenheim and Kleinsachsenheim fruit and horticultural associations and the Ludwigsburg specialist maintenance association, an enthusiastic team is overseeing and managing the project. "The aim is to reintroduce people to the importance of orchards," explains Wörner. The aim is to preserve the cultural landscape, he emphasizes. Existing trees have to be cared for and new trees planted.
A successful project: over the last seven years, 1,000 new plants have been planted in cooperation with the owners of the orchards. Wörner and his colleagues were also supported by the Environmental and Nature Conservation Foundation of Kreissparkasse Ludwigsburg.
According to Wörner, awards such as the Ludwigsburg district environmental prize are important for drawing attention to the project and reaching supporters. He hopes that many more award winners can be supported in this way. Every single one counts. "Every drop wears away the stone," he summarizes.
