System change: AVL insists on container exchange

With the changeover to the new system for collecting recyclables in the district, every household is entitled to a larger container if required. This is emphasized by the waste recycling company of the Ludwigsburg district AVL. At the turn of the year, there was increasing discontent in the district because citizens were given blue boxes for the collection of glass packaging, for example, but these turned out to be too small.

A blue plastic basket is filled with various empty liquor bottles, including green and clear glass containers. A hand reaches into the basket to hold a bottle, emphasizing the focus on recycling or disposal of glass bottles.

With the changeover to the new system for collecting recyclables in the district, every household is entitled to a larger container if required. This is emphasized by the waste recycling company of the Ludwigsburg district AVL. At the turn of the year, there was increasing displeasure in the district because citizens were given blue boxes for the collection of glass packaging, for example, but these turned out to be too small. "People have now been repeatedly told that replacing them with a larger container is only an option in the long term or after good justification," says Sebastian Löschner, Head of Resources and Logistics at AVL. However, this contradicts the Packaging Act and the contractual basis. These expressly stipulate that the containers must be exchanged on request.

The problem: AVL and the district are not the clients of the responsible waste disposal companies PreZero and Kurz. According to the Federal Packaging Act, the dual systems are responsible for the disposal of glass and lightweight packaging. In the district of Ludwigsburg, this is Interseroh Dienstleistungs GmbH, based in Cologne. "A municipal solution from a single source would have been much more citizen-friendly, but does not comply with the law," says Tilman Hepperle, Managing Director of AVL. As there was previously no separate collection of glass and lightweight packaging in the Ludwigsburg district, the size requirements for the respective containers could only be estimated. "It is therefore all the more essential that the waste disposal companies make it possible to exchange containers without any ifs and buts if necessary - and do so quickly and unbureaucratically," emphasizes Hepperle.

AVL already contacted Interseroh Dienstleistungs GmbH last week and asked them to exert a corresponding influence on the waste disposal companies working on their behalf. "The people in the district are willing to accept a new separation system. But they need a cooperative service partner who will provide them with sufficiently large containers," says Hepperle.
