16 German-speaking steep-slope regions founded the Steillagen-Connection last year to find joint solutions for the preservation of steep-slope vineyards and to learn from each other's successful projects. "We have one major topic in common with the other regions: the preservation of steep slopes," says District Administrator Allgaier.
Meeting to initiate new projects
The three-day meeting is the first of its kind. The main aim of these busy days is to learn from each other and initiate new projects. "We are particularly proud to be part of this Steep Slope Connection," emphasized District Administrator Allgaier during his welcome address at the district administration office.
The situation of the steep slopes and the situation of the winegrowers is difficult in all regions. There is a lack of young talent, the bureaucratic hurdles are high and costs have risen in all areas. In addition, some grape varieties have to be adapted to climate change. The social requirements for sustainable and ecological viticulture also present challenges.
Consumers help determine the future of steep slopes
In the end, the citizens, especially in the steep slope regions, will decide as consumers how much the preservation of steep slopes as a cultural landscape is worth to them. After all, it will only be possible to preserve the cultural landscape in the long term by increasing profitability. "We all face major challenges in the coming years and must join forces to achieve this," emphasizes Allgaier.
