Stabilizing group offer for refugee children with mental health problems in the Ludwigsburg district enters its third round

After a successful second round, the "Expressive Sandwork" project is now entering its third round. It is based at the Social Service Asylum of the Ludwigsburg District Office and expands the existing offer for refugees with mental health issues. Dedicated volunteer companions are urgently needed.

A miniature scene in a blue container depicts a sandy landscape with small figures enjoying a picnic under a sunshade. Nearby, construction vehicles and scattered trees and flowers create a lively outdoor atmosphere. Ruins rise in the background, adding an element of interest to the setting.

With the help of expressive sandwork, children who have been confronted with traumatic experiences from their home country or while fleeing are to find a safe space to process these experiences (Ludwigsburg District Office).

With the help of expressive sandwork, children who have been confronted with traumatic experiences from their home country or while fleeing are given a safe space to process these experiences. The aim is to activate psychological self-healing powers and strengthen the children's resilience. This non-verbal method is particularly suitable for children who were traumatized at an early age and have difficulty expressing their feelings in words. By creatively designing scenes in the sand, positive memories can be awakened that promote a sense of control and self-efficacy.

Using a sandbox, various materials and play figures, the children depict and process their inner experiences. Around ten children between the ages of six and 13 take part in each round of the project. A session comprises eleven to twelve weekly appointments.

Volunteer companions wanted

Volunteer mentors play a central role in the project. Each accompanying person is there for one child for the entire duration of the project. It is therefore important that they make time for all eleven appointments. Before the project begins, the companions receive comprehensive training from an experienced trainer. In addition, they receive further support during the project and have access to "supervision" and "intervision", two methods for reflection and quality improvement. At the end of the project, all volunteers receive a certificate.

An information event for all interested volunteers will take place on Thursday, July 17, 2025, at 16:00. Venue: Auf dem Wasen 9, 71640 Ludwigsburg, room 212.

Interested volunteer companions can register with Anja Uhlmann and Pia Scheeff and obtain further information: Email: Anja.Uhlmann[at]landkreis-ludwigsburg.de,Pia.Scheeff[at]landkreis-ludwigsburg.de
