Sports fields at Römerhügel reserved for school sports in future

The sports fields at Römerhügel will no longer be open to the public in future. This is due to repeated damage, soiling and increasing vandalism on the grounds. The usage and fee regulations for the district's own sports facilities did not previously provide for the use of the outdoor sports facilities by third parties.

Several repairs already this year

Nevertheless, the facility was previously freely accessible and was used intensively, especially in the afternoons and at weekends. The tartan sports areas in particular were often very busy. However, problems arose time and again: Garbage and barbecue scraps were left lying around, dogs were brought onto the sports areas and damage was caused to the surfaces, nets and fences. Several repairs have already had to be carried out this year alone.

Major damage caused by vandalism

In addition, a garage next to the sports hall was set on fire at the beginning of April. This resulted in damage of more than 30,000 euros. A few weeks later, a side door and a fence on the sports field were also vandalized.

Only open for school sports

In order to better protect the tartan pitch, which was recently renovated at a cost of around 20,000 euros, the facility has been closed in the evenings since mid-April. In future, the sports fields will only be open for school sports. Access will then be exclusively via the sports teachers during lessons. After the last sports lesson, the janitors will check the facility. "We very much regret that it will no longer be possible to keep the sports fields open for recreational sports in the future. Repeated acts of vandalism have unfortunately forced us to take this step. Only with the new rules can we maintain the sports facilities in the long term and secure them for school sports," says Bettina Beck, the head of finance, education and building management at the Ludwigsburg district office.
