In 2020, the committee, together with the Municipal Health Conference, had already recognized the structural bottlenecks in the supply of midwives and initiated initial support measures. These were supported by the district council with a total of 299,000 euros. So far, around 102,677 euros of this has been used - with measurable success.
"There are still pregnant women and young families in the district who cannot find a midwife, there is still more demand than there is capacity to provide care," explainsDistrict Administrator Dietmar Allgaierand adds "the support program has significantly increased the care capacity of midwives."
Results of funding to date: more than 4,000 women and families cared for
Between 2021 and 2024, over 4,000 women and families were cared for by the newly established practices. The so-called Komm structure proved to be particularly effective: women come to the midwife and not the other way around. This enables more efficient care and facilitates access to care, especially for families who might otherwise have been left without midwifery help, explains Dr. Karlin Stark, Head of Health in the Ludwigsburg district.
"With the help of the communal structures created, the midwives were able to care for more women and families," she continued.
Continuation of funding: 36,550 euros for the next three years
However, funding remains a challenge. Increased energy prices, general inflation and personnel changes make continued support necessary. "In order not to jeopardize the effect of the previous funding and established structures, support for already established practices is still urgently needed," emphasizes Dr. Stark.
Despite the tight budget situation, the social committee has now unanimously recommended that 36,550 euros be made available for the next three years - specifically to stabilize existing midwife practices. There are currently no plans to expand the service due to the financial situation, but maintaining existing care is classified as a priority voluntary service.
