The idea of combining art and nature has produced outstanding cultural projects in Germany over the past few decades. Different concepts have given rise to art trails, forest sculpture paths and sculpture fields as tourist attractions. As early as 2017, a concept for a sculpture cycle path through the varied landscape of the Stroh and Heckengäus was therefore developed under the leadership of the district.
This planned sculpture cycle path is intended to combine the well-developed and extensive cycle path network, consisting of tourist and everyday cycle paths as well as pedelec charging and rental stations, with art and culture. Along the planned circular route between the municipalities of Schwieberdingen, Hemmingen and Eberdingen, seven works of art relating to the region and the landscape will enrich the cycling experience.
A renowned jury has now selected the contemporary sculptures, sculptures and installations that will permanently turn the cycle path into a new cultural highlight in the district. Sculptor Jessica Twitchell, sculptor Werner Pokorny, Marco Hompes, director of the Heidenheim Art Museum and Eva Paulitsch, curator of the Kunsthalle Göppingen, made a preliminary selection from the 47 designs submitted by 35 interested artists. The experts were supported in the final selection by District Administrator Dietmar Allgaier, Peter Schäfer, Mayor of the municipality of Eberdingen, Thomas Schäfer, Mayor of Hemmingen, and Nico Lauxmann, Mayor of Schwieberdingen.
The winning designs are:
- Thomas Weber: "Turm"
- Reinhard Scherer: "Strohgäuer Sattel"
- Nino Maaskola: "Landmarken weiter als das Auge reicht"
- Nina Laaf: "Begegnung" and "Dasein"
- Tilmann Eberwein: "Rotation Rack"
- Daniel Wagenblast: "HELLO, HELLO, GUTEN TAG"
The sculptures are to be installed by the planned opening of the cycle path on June 23, 2022. Total costs of around 210,000 euros have been budgeted for the design and implementation of the sculpture cycle path. The project is being financed by the municipalities of Eberdingen, Hemmingen, Schwieberdingen and the district of Ludwigsburg. Additional funding comes from the Art, Culture and Education Foundation of Kreissparkasse Ludwigsburg, Peter Klein GmbH & Co KG, the Wüstenrot Foundation, as well as co-financing from the Verband Region Stuttgart amounting to a maximum of 60,000 euros.
