When camping, gas cylinders are often part of the basic equipment, whether for cooking, heating or barbecuing. However, they also pose risks if they are used improperly, which is why handling them requires caution: "Damaged gas cylinders must never be used," warns the district fire chief.
They must always be stored in well-ventilated areas - never in a tent or in the immediate vicinity. A clear warning signal: "If there is a smell of gas, this is a sign of a possible leak - then the cylinder must be disposed of immediately." When in use, the cylinder must be kept in a stable position to avoid the risk of tipping and accidents.
Campfires only in permitted areas
A campfire creates a cozy atmosphere, especially in the evening. But here too, safety comes before romance. "If it's windy, open fires should be avoided altogether," advises Dorroch. Under no circumstances should fire pits be set up arbitrarily - public, approved fire pits are the safe alternative. Otherwise there is a risk of the fire spreading rapidly to the forest or vegetation - with devastating consequences.
Clear rules also apply when barbecuing with charcoal: Fireproof surfaces, sufficient distance from trees and tents and extinguishing agents within easy reach - such as a bucket of water or a fire extinguisher - are mandatory. After barbecuing, any remaining embers must be completely extinguished.
Well prepared with the right first aid kit
Accidents can never be completely ruled out. This makes it all the more important to be properly prepared. "I recommend taking the first aid kit from the car", says the expert. He also advises taking your vaccination record with you - especially when traveling abroad. The emergency number 112 should also be known. The emergency number works throughout the EU.
Practical in an emergency: cool packs, which are activated by pinching, are useful for bruises or insect bites, for example.
"Safety is a good travel companion," summarizes the district fire chief. If you follow simple rules, you can enjoy a carefree camping vacation - and protect yourself and others from unnecessary risks.
