Project against violence against people with disabilities in Ludwigsburg

People with disabilities are exposed to an increased risk of becoming victims of violence in various areas of life. According to a press release from the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, for example, over 26% of all people with disabilities who work in a workshop in Germany have experienced sexual harassment at work in the last three years, with women more than twice as likely as men. Women therefore often experience multiple discrimination. Men, on the other hand, are more frequently affected by physical assault in outpatient and inpatient care than women. These figures suggest that people with disabilities are also victims of violence in the city and district of Ludwigsburg.

To counteract this, the city and district of Ludwigsburg have founded a joint project group. It is committed to sustainably improving the lives of people with disabilities and offering them a safe environment in which they feel protected and supported.

The project group pursues several goals: To raise awareness in society through educational campaigns. People with disabilities, their families and professionals should know their rights and where they can get support quickly if they need it. Further plans include the qualification of contact and advice centers in dealing with people with disabilities. Another focus is on the exchange of knowledge and networking - particularly between the city, district, associations and social institutions.

The project group has also already implemented specific safety measures. On International Women's Day, bag alarms were distributed to female employees at the Theo Lorch workshops to increase their safety. At the end of 2024, a folding information card is to be published in plain language. It will help people with and without disabilities to find support quickly and easily.

The project group is made up of representatives from the city and district: Judith Raupp, Equal Opportunities Officer for the city of Ludwigsburg, Gertraud Selig, Inclusion Officer for the city, Cynthia Schönau, Equal Opportunities Officer for the district of Ludwigsburg, and Katharina Binder, responsible for social planning and inclusion in the district. The project is supported by numerous associations and institutions, including the Ludwigsburg District Inclusive Advisory Board, the women's association Courage, INSEL e.V., Lebenshilfe Ludwigsburg e.V., Ludwigsburg Police Headquarters, PräventSozial gGmbH, Pro Familia e.V., the Round Table for and with People with Disabilities of the City of Ludwigsburg, the Sexual and Life Counseling Service for People with Disabilities, Silberdistel e.V., the Ludwigsburg State Education Authority, the Liebenau Foundation, the Theo-Lorch Workshops, Tragwerk e.V. and the Karlshöhe residential group.
