The new semester with around 1,600 courses, lectures and excursions starts on March 7, 2022 and registration is now open.
The focus of the semester is on the highly topical subject of "Together in Diversity". Two semester focus events with well-known speakers herald the start of the topic in focus: On March 31, Dunja Hayali asks herself and the audience the question "How do we want to live together?" On April 22, Balian Buschbaum will report on his experiences on the topic of "Living diversity with diversity".
In the 2022 summer semester, the Schiller-vhs will focus on the topic of "Together in diversity". Diversity - often referred to as diversity in current discussions - is now more than ever part of the reality of our lives and our everyday lives. Former Olympian, bestselling author, speaker and coach Balian Buschbaum will be sharing his personal experiences of "Living diversity with diversity" in Remseck on April 22.
It's not just the pandemic or growing nationalism that make our society appear to be in a state of constant change. What divides, what unites? How do we make developments understandable? How can we work together to strengthen society's resilience against injustice and undesirable developments and take on more responsibility for good coexistence? Presenter and author Dunja Hayali raises many questions at the semester focus event on March 31 in Kornwestheim and provides insights into her very personal answers.
The program for the semester focus "Together in Diversity" includes over 130 lectures, discussions, courses, workshops, guided tours and study trips. Under the motto "Experiencing a diverse homeland", study trips will take you to the eventful city of Leipzig, the federal city of Bonn and the Palatinate Forest, where hiking enthusiasts and connoisseurs will get their money's worth with wine tasting, forest bathing and guided hikes. A day trip to Baden-Baden includes exploring the spa town and the famous casino as well as a look behind the scenes at SWR.
Following last year's cancellation due to the pandemic, the Marbach Forum Zeitgeschehen will take place again in the summer semester. The 5th Marbacher Forum Zeitgeschehen on March 24 and 25 in the Stadthalle Marbach is dedicated to the hot topic of "Crisis management in democracy". Experts from various fields will shed light on the changes, risks and opportunities brought about by the pandemic and enter into discussion with the audience. At the opening event on 14 March, Prof. Dr. Peter Bofinger will speak on the topic of "After the corona shock: Germany under pressure to adapt".
The coronavirus pandemic is also constantly presenting the adult education center with new challenges. The hygiene concept is constantly being adapted to the current Corona Ordinance. This often necessitates changes at short notice. Due to the minimum distance requirements, it is still necessary to limit the number of participants in many courses, especially in the areas of exercise, relaxation and dance. Many rooms cannot currently be used by the vhs as the municipalities need the capacity themselves, e.g. for the establishment of vaccination centers. Additional course instructors who meet the 2G requirements are being sought, particularly in the areas of gymnastics, exercise and relaxation.
The digital offering includes over 170 online courses in the summer semester. Hybrid courses are a new addition to the range: These offer the option of taking part in the course either online or in person on site. The course is broadcast online and online participants can take part live via video conference and chat. Schiller-vhs has procured new, modern technical equipment for selected course rooms for this special course format. The hybrid format includes courses on Microsoft Office, Word, Excel and Access 2019 as well as tax strategies and sales controlling.
The vhs program always focuses on special target groups, but this semester in particular. For example, there are many courses in the summer semester that are specifically tailored to the needs of older people, younger people, people with disabilities or specifically for women or men. The offer ranges from the lecture "Financial Independence for Women" to special "Men's Cooking Courses", car safety training for senior citizens and the workshop "Where is the Journey Taking Me? My strengths and goals" for young people about to leave school.
New in the dance department are the courses "Dancing with and on a chair for people with limited mobility", "Dancing for people with Parkinson's" and "Line dancing for senior citizens". Numerous gymnastics and yoga courses are specially tailored to the needs of older participants or those with limited mobility.
In the inclusive "Cooking and baking" course, people with and without disabilities have fun learning new things in the kitchen together. The "Creating accessible websites" course focuses on the needs of people with visual impairments.
The lectures and workshops "Confronting structural racism", "Migration history: immigration and emigration in Baden-Württemberg", "Equality and diversity in history, religion and identity politics", "Working conditions and women's rights in the textile industry" and "History of homosexuality - between persecution and understanding" promise exciting discussions. On the "Rainbow Tour Stuttgart", participants explore the city from the perspective of the LGBTQ community and learn exciting facts about Stuttgart's LGBTQ past and present. The "Alternative city tour with Trott-war" focuses on the reality of life for socially disadvantaged people in Stuttgart with a visit to the homeless and addiction support services.
The course "Grandmother's herbal knowledge rediscovered" shows how sustainability can be practiced across generations. The biological diversity of our planet is the focus of the lecture "Biodiversity - species diversity and species loss".
The courses, lectures, discussion groups, excursions and study trips encourage people to "think outside the box" not only through their learning content, but also through encounters within the group. Contact with other participants breaks down barriers and creates mutual understanding. People often meet on vhs courses and get talking to each other who would probably not have met "in everyday life". This exchange is more important than ever, especially in times of new challenges and controversial points of view, as we have been experiencing since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.
The director of Schiller vhs, Constanze Weis, states: "Diversity must be lived in all areas: This applies to participants*, the planning and teaching staff, the administration of the adult education centers and, of course, to all lecturers*. The daily work at the Schiller-vhs as a large district adult education center shows that it can only work together: courses offered in 36 cities and communities throughout the district of Ludwigsburg and beyond are only possible through close cooperation with local representatives, cooperation partners, room managers, janitors and many other stakeholders. It is precisely this diverse cooperation that creates the multifaceted range of further education courses offered by the Schiller-vhs."
