Across the care landscape by bus

Nursing staff are desperately needed - reason enough for the district administration office to introduce 18 interested refugees and migrants to the nursing profession. The tour was a success and is to be repeated.

A diverse group of individuals stands together outside a building, smiling and posing for the camera. The group includes men, women, and children, wearing casual clothing and displaying a sense of community and togetherness.

Highly motivated: Many participants wanted to start an internship straight after the tour.

A bus tour through the care landscape in the district was recently organized by the specialist advice service for the elderly, the asylum social service and the job center. The aim was to introduce refugees and migrants to care professions. Interested parties had the opportunity to get to know an inpatient care facility and the work of the nursing staff and to ask questions. The trip first took the 18 participants to the ASB day care facility in Ludwigsburg. After a visit to the facility, the bus tour continued to the nursing home Haus Walckerhof. Throughout the trip, the participants were given extensive information about care for the elderly and training for care assistants in the Ludwigsburg district.

Where can I apply? What activities are involved in the geriatric nursing profession? What career development opportunities are there? What are the working hours like? Where can I find nursing homes? What does an internship look like? The interested parties asked these and other questions to the management of the care facility. The refugees were able to get practical tips and answers to their questions in a pleasant atmosphere. In addition, technical aids that support the work of the nursing staff were demonstrated and tried out. The bus tour enabled the participants to make personal contact with internship and training providers. It was pointed out that a straightforward CV and a school-leaving certificate with top grades are not necessarily the only decisive factors for a career in nursing. It is more important to have the motivation to learn a nursing profession and to enjoy working with people. However, a certain level of language skills should be present. After the inspection, the participants were very motivated. Some of them wanted to start an internship or apprenticeship straight away.

It is often difficult to start an apprenticeship or internship because, in addition to German language skills, the necessary contacts are sometimes lacking. Once a place has been found, the initial period is sometimes problematic, as many things work differently than in their home countries. This is precisely where the Asylum Social Service, the specialist advice service for the elderly and the job center come in and support the people.

Similar bus tours will also be offered in the future in order to give more people the chance to start a career.
