Reading makes you rich in ideas

This year's district decision of the nationwide reading competition in Präsenz could take place without any restrictions: The best readers in the district have now been chosen.

A group of twenty children and three adults stand together in a formal setting, each holding awards and tote bags. The children, varying in age and gender, display smiles, conveying a sense of accomplishment. The backdrop features a seated audience in a meeting room.

The Foundation of the German Publishers and Booksellers Association organizes the competition, which is held under the patronage of the Federal President. The reading competition has been held every year since 1959 and has around 600,000 participants nationwide. The district, which has been involved since the 1960s, once again took part in Germany's oldest and largest school competition this year under the direction of the district youth welfare department at the district administration office.

"Those who read are rich - rich in ideas. And those who read aloud share these ideas with others," said Heiner Pfrommer, Head of the Department of Labor, Youth and Social Affairs, who represented District Administrator Dietmar Allgaier at the award ceremony. Those who, like the school winners, can read aloud skillfully, take others on a journey into the land of fantasy and thus enrich themselves and others.

In view of the good performances, the jury - consisting of authors, a previous year's winner, employees from libraries, the state education authority and the press - did not have an easy task. But in the end, a decision had to be made. The jury members agreed that there can only be winners in this competition.

All participants received a book prize from the Börsenverein Foundation, book vouchers from the district and other attractive prizes. The winners of the district competition can compete in the subsequent regional competition.
