"Study4future" learning support program for newly immigrated pupils: support for language and academic development - Stiftung der Kreissparkasse Ludwigsburg supports the project

The "Study4future" learning support program for newly immigrated pupils was launched by the district of Ludwigsburg in cooperation with the Ludwigsburg State Education Authority and the Ludwigsburg University of Education. The aims of the program are to catch up on the lessons that were missed during the corona-related school closures, improve German language skills, increase motivation to learn and thus increase the chances of a successful future. The program is aimed at pupils in preparatory classes (VKL classes) and regular classes who have attended a VKL class in the past.

Participation in the "Study4future" project is recommended by the class teachers in consultation with the subject teachers to those former or current pupils in the VKL classes who, in their opinion, require additional qualified support.

The learning and support offer is also supplemented by work with parents: parents of pupils taking part in the "Study4future" program are informed about the German school system, the permeability of the school system and study and vocational training funding options at an information evening for parents so that they can make appropriate decisions regarding their children's educational future. The parents' evenings are held in cooperation with the Baden-Württemberg Parents' Foundation.

The support teachers are students at the Ludwigsburg University of Education. Through their work on the "Study4future" program, the students are given the opportunity to gain practical experience and expand their skills, as well as receiving an allowance. In addition, students have the opportunity to have their student teaching activities as part of the project recognized as a block internship or professionalization internship.

The project is funded by the Foundation for Youth Development, Labor and Social Affairs of Kreisparkasse Ludwigsburg. The funding amounted to 15,000 euros in the 2020/21 school year and 40,000 euros in the 2021/22 school year.

The project was successfully launched in nine schools in the Ludwigsburg district in the 2020/21 school year and was very well received by the participating schools, student teachers, pupils and volunteers. A total of 93 pupils and 20 groups of pupils took part. As part of Study4Future, they had 37 weekly lessons of 45 minutes each. German and math were taught, and there was also support with homework and GSF (Gleichwertige Feststellung von Schülerleistungen) in all subjects. In the 2021/22 school year, 17 schools in the Ludwigsburg district and 20 student teachers took part in Study4future.

"The need for learning and language support for children in VKL classes has increased enormously due to the second school closure during the coronavirus pandemic. I am delighted that we have been able to expand the project from nine to 17 participating schools in the 2021/22 school year thanks to the extremely generous donation from the Stiftung Jugendförderung, Arbeit und Soziales der Kreisparkasse Ludwigsburg and that even more pupils from immigrant families can benefit from the project. The popularity of the participating schools is enormous. Without the Study4future project, many would not have had the opportunity to support newly immigrated pupils in their linguistic and academic development in addition to their school lessons. The cooperation between the schools and the students works very well and the pupils make good progress in the remedial lessons. This shows that Study4future in the district of Ludwigsburg was the right response to the coronavirus-related learning and language deficits of newly arrived pupils," says District Administrator Dietmar Allgaier.
