As part of the municipal climate congress in Karlsruhe last week, the district of Ludwigsburg was awarded the European Energy Award (eea) for the first time, together with 40 other award-winning municipalities.

Prof. Dr. Adler - Head of the Department for Environment, Technology and Construction - accepted the award from Thekla Walker, Minister for the Environment, Climate and Energy. He considers the eea to be an excellent instrument for further developing climate protection activities. The process was initiated and carried out under the leadership of climate protection manager Julia Neuhäuser - from the first meetings of the energy team to the collection of data for the as-is analysis and the creation of the work program through to the official audit. The results now provide indications of further potential that the district can tap into on its way to climate neutrality.

"Who if not us local authorities - cities, municipalities and districts - can drive climate protection forward in concrete terms? That's why we, as the district of Ludwigsburg, are taking on the exemplary role of the public sector and working to maintain a liveable region in the future. Climate protection is our mission," says District Administrator Dietmar Allgaier, explaining the district office's commitment to climate protection. "I am delighted that we have now received the audit for the first time," Allgaier continued.

The district of Ludwigsburg has been very committed to climate protection for many years. In 2013, the district began drawing up a climate protection concept with the involvement of the local authorities, which is currently being updated. The establishment and expansion of the strong regional energy agency has been a great success. The district of Ludwigsburg is also facing up to the challenges in the transport sector. In addition to a well-developed public transport network, it actively promotes cycling and is currently drawing up a climate mobility plan. Another focus is on the process launched last year to achieve a climate-neutral administration by 2035. Since January 2023, employees have received a mileage allowance for cycling as a reward for climate-friendly mobility for commuters.

The European eea certification process recognizes cities, municipalities and districts that systematically drive forward their sustainability activities and are pioneers in climate protection. A total of 181 municipalities in southwest Germany are now taking part in the eea. Never before have so many been awarded as this year: 21 cities, 13 municipalities and seven districts - eleven of them received the special eea gold award.
