Smoke detectors are an essential part of fire protection and can save lives in an emergency. In Baden-Württemberg, there is therefore a legal obligation to install smoke alarms in all rooms where people sleep, as well as in corridors and stairwells that serve as escape routes. For example, bedrooms, children's rooms and guest rooms must be fitted with a smoke detector. This regulation applies not only to private homes, but also to accommodation such as hotels, guest houses, shared accommodation, homes and clinics.
Installation is very simple
Installing a smoke alarm is straightforward and can be done without drilling. "Thanks to adhesive or magnetic mounts, a smoke detector can be securely attached to the ceiling in just a few steps," explains Dorroch. Ideally, the detector should be installed in the middle of the room to ensure the best possible detection of smoke.
A smoke detector has an average lifespan of around ten years. When the battery is nearing the end of its charge, the device automatically emits a warning tone to indicate that it needs to be replaced. Regular inspection and maintenance of smoke detectors is crucial for their functionality, emphasizes the district fire chief. "Anyone who adheres to the prescribed safety measures is actively helping to protect themselves and others."
