District fire chief Andy Dorroch: "Smoke alarms save lives"

A piercing, shrill beeping breaks the silence of the night. It's an alarm that won't let anyone sleep - and that's exactly its job. "The smoke alarm should be so loud - after all, it should wake us up and warn us if a fire starts in our home," says district fire chief Andy Dorroch, emphasizing the importance of the warning device. The experienced firefighter reveals what to look out for in smoke alarms.

District fire chief Andy Dorroch advises installing smoke alarms in all bedrooms as well as in corridors and stairwells that serve as escape routes (Ludwigsburg District Office).

Smoke detectors are an essential part of fire protection and can save lives in an emergency. In Baden-Württemberg, there is therefore a legal obligation to install smoke alarms in all rooms where people sleep, as well as in corridors and stairwells that serve as escape routes. For example, bedrooms, children's rooms and guest rooms must be fitted with a smoke detector. This regulation applies not only to private homes, but also to accommodation such as hotels, guest houses, shared accommodation, homes and clinics.

Installation is very simple

Installing a smoke alarm is straightforward and can be done without drilling. "Thanks to adhesive or magnetic mounts, a smoke detector can be securely attached to the ceiling in just a few steps," explains Dorroch. Ideally, the detector should be installed in the middle of the room to ensure the best possible detection of smoke.

A smoke detector has an average lifespan of around ten years. When the battery is nearing the end of its charge, the device automatically emits a warning tone to indicate that it needs to be replaced. Regular inspection and maintenance of smoke detectors is crucial for their functionality, emphasizes the district fire chief. "Anyone who adheres to the prescribed safety measures is actively helping to protect themselves and others."
