Job fair as a platform for intensive job interviews

It was a premiere - and a sequel is quite likely: at a small but excellent job fair organized by the company advisory service at the Ludwigsburg district job center, customers of the job center were able to make low-threshold, personal contact with employers - including specific job offers.

A group of four people engage in a discussion around a small table. One man, wearing glasses and a brown suit, gestures while speaking, as the others listen attentively. Coffee cups are placed on the table, creating a casual conversational atmosphere.

Time for discussions: Christian Zillmann, Head of Company Advice, in conversation with Jobcenter customers

Time for applications and direct discussions: In the late morning, there are always a handful of selected visitors around the employers' stands in the conference zone in the Ludwigsburg district hall. This is precisely the concept behind the job fair, which the company advisory service at the Ludwigsburg district job center has organized in this format for the first time. "We want our customers to be able to talk to interested employers in person," says Christian Zillmann, Head of Company Advice at the Jobcenter. It's not so much about breaking records in terms of numbers or handing out as many information flyers as possible; rather, the company advisory service wanted to use the small but excellent job fair as an opportunity to make low-threshold, personal contacts.

The employers present at the fair also had very specific jobs to offer: Apprenticeships in a bakery, sales, geriatric care, housekeeping, help in a canteen kitchen - the range of jobs on offer surprised many a visitor. For example, a young woman who is a customer of the job center and would like to work as a sales clerk expressed her satisfaction. "That was a really good conversation today," she says of her contact with a shoe retailer. A restaurant manager from Ludwigsburg, who was present with a stand, was also enthusiastic. "I have a whole list of very promising interested parties," he says. "We're growing and constantly need staff - so I'm glad that the company consultancy keeps finding me employees."

Christian Zillmann from Firmenberatung is satisfied with the premiere of the job fair. "I have the impression that a lot of things got off the ground today," he says. The declared aim of the event is to bridge the often large gap between the lives of Jobcenter customers and the world of work. "That is precisely our strength: we know our customers, we know the employers and our support services can help overcome initial hurdles."

Background: The Jobcenter Ludwigsburg District's company advice service sees itself as a service provider for companies and as an interface to potential employees. It offers companies individual advice on filling vacancies; individual solutions are often found because the company advice service can effectively support employers in identifying requirements and pre-selecting potential applicants. The company consultancy portfolio is rounded off by various subsidies and support services and company visits.
